Gemstone Selection: Which gemstone to wear and why — Complete Method

✍️ Jyotishacharya Aditya Dhar Dwivedi · 🔎 Last reviewed: · 🧮 calculation-method
⚡ Summary in 30 seconds
  • Gemstones are selected based on benefic planets in the birth chart rather than by the rashi name.
  • Wearing a gemstone for a malefic or maraka planet increases its strength and causes harm.
  • Gemstones require proper ritual purity, metal, finger, day, mantra, and Pran Pratishtha.

Gemstones are the most popular remedy in astrology — and also the most misunderstood. Lists of 'gemstones according to rashi' tell only half the story; the classical method selects a gemstone based on the benefic planet in the birth chart, not by rashi name.

This article provides that systematic method: on what basis to choose a gemstone, which one to wear, how to wear it, and in what situations you should never wear one.

Core Principle: A gemstone strengthens the planet

A gemstone condenses the ray-energy of the planet it represents — meaning wearing a gemstone is like 'turning up the volume' of that planet. Therefore, the rule is clear: wear a gemstone only for that planet which is benefic in your birth chart but weak in strength (combust, debilitated, afflicted) — the benefic will get strength, and its positive results will increase.

The reverse rule is equally important: the gemstone of a malefic-maraka planet increases its strength and causes harm. Wearing something just because it 'looked pretty' without checking the birth chart is astrologically like taking medicine without a diagnosis.

Nine Planets — Nine Gemstones (Including Uparatnas)

Classical table of planetary gemstones:

  • Surya — Ruby (Uparatna: Red Tourmaline)
  • Chandra — Pearl (Moonstone)
  • Mangal — Red Coral (Red Agate)
  • Budh — Emerald (Green Onyx/Peridot)
  • Guru — Yellow Sapphire (Heliodor/Yellow Topaz)
  • Shukra — Diamond (White Sapphire/Zircon)
  • Shani — Blue Sapphire (Blue/Purple Sapphire — Blue Sapphire always with a trial period)
  • Rahu — Hessonite · Ketu — Cat's Eye

Which planet's gemstone — Decision sequence

The practical sequence is:

  • First priority to the Lagnesh — friend to both body and fortune
  • Then the Bhagyesh (9th lord) and Panchmesh (5th lord) — trine lords are always benefic
  • The gemstone for the dasha period of whichever benefic planet's Mahadasha is currently running and is weak
  • Gemstones of Trik-lords (6-8-12), maraka, and birth-malefic planets are prohibited — even if they are listed in the 'rashi-gemstone' table
  • If in doubt, first test with an uparatna — main gemstone later

Wearing Procedure: Metal, Finger, Day, Mantra

The result of a gemstone is tied to ritual purity — the right metal, the right finger, on the planetary day, during an auspicious Muhurta in Shukla Paksha, along with the chanting of the planetary mantra. General outline: Ruby-Coral in copper/gold on the ring finger; Pearl in silver on the little finger; Emerald in gold/bronze on the little finger; Yellow Sapphire in gold on the index finger; Diamond-Blue Sapphire in platinum/Panchdhatu respectively on the middle finger; Hessonite-Cat's Eye in Panchdhatu on the middle finger.

Weight (ratti) is determined by body weight and planetary strength. And most importantly — Pran Pratishtha: Without energization, a gemstone is merely an ornament. Every gemstone dispatched from the Nakshatra Tak store is energized according to planets and sanctified entirely through Vedic procedures.

Precautions and Misconceptions

Keep three rules in mind: (1) Blue Sapphire should never be worn directly — a 3-day test (under the pillow/tied to the arm) is a mandatory tradition; remove it immediately if it feels inauspicious. (2) Gemstones of enemy planets should not be worn together — such as Ruby with Blue Sapphire or Diamond. (3) A broken or cracked gemstone does not give results, replace it.

Misconceptions: 'Gemstones change destiny' — No, they support a weak benefic planet; direction is determined solely by the birth chart. 'The bigger, the better' — No, purity (flawless, natural, treatment-free) is a greater criterion than weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can two or three gemstones be worn together? — Gemstones of friendly planets (like the Ruby-Coral-Yellow Sapphire family) can be worn together; enemy pairs never. Get combinations made only after consulting the birth chart.

In how much time does a gemstone give results? — Traditionally, one transit cycle of that planet (usually a few weeks to a few months) is observed after wearing; if the dasha is favorable, experiences are felt quickly.

How to identify real vs. fake? — Certified laboratory testing (lab certificate) is the reliable method; claiming to identify by color and shine is incomplete. The gemstones from our store come with certificates.
