Shadbala: The Six Strengths of a Planet and What They Mean in a Chart
- Six strengths: Sthana, Dig, Kala, Cheshta, Naisargika and Drik — totalled in rupas (1 rupa = 60 shashtiamshas)
- Minimum requirements differ: Mercury 7, Sun and Jupiter 6.5, Moon 6, Venus 5.5, Mars and Saturn 5 rupas
- Strength = the power to give results; whether those results are pleasant or hard depends on house lordship and yogas
«My Jupiter is exalted, so why did it not deliver?» — because the sign is only one part of a planet's strength. Parashara weighed a planet's power on six separate scales, and their sum is called «Shadbala».
This article explains what those six strengths are, the unit they are counted in, the minimum each planet needs, and how the number is actually read in prediction.
The six strengths
Each one measures a different side of a planet's power:
- Sthana Bala — positional strength: the sign and divisional charts the planet is in — exaltation or debilitation, own or friendly sign, kendra, panaphara or apoklima
- Dig Bala — directional strength: Jupiter and Mercury are at full strength in the Lagna, the Sun and Mars in the 10th, Saturn in the 7th, the Moon and Venus in the 4th
- Kala Bala — temporal strength: day or night birth, waxing or waning fortnight, the lords of the year, month, weekday and hora, and the ayana
- Cheshta Bala — motional strength: a retrograde or slow-moving planet is counted strong in cheshta
- Naisargika Bala — natural strength, the same in every chart: the Sun is highest, then the Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn lowest
- Drik Bala — aspectual strength: raised by the aspects of benefics, lowered by the aspects of malefics
The unit — rupa and shashtiamsha
Shadbala is counted in «shashtiamshas» (virupas); 60 shashtiamshas make one «rupa». The six strengths are added up and the planet's total is written in rupas — for example, 7.2 rupas.
Shadbala is not worked out for Rahu and Ketu; the calculation covers the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn.

Parashara gives a minimum required strength for each planet. Above it the planet is strong, below it weak:
- Sun — 6.5 rupas (390 shashtiamshas)
- Moon — 6 rupas (360 shashtiamshas)
- Mars — 5 rupas (300 shashtiamshas)
- Mercury — 7 rupas (420 shashtiamshas)
- Jupiter — 6.5 rupas (390 shashtiamshas)
- Venus — 5.5 rupas (330 shashtiamshas)
- Saturn — 5 rupas (300 shashtiamshas)
Read the ratio, not the total
Each planet's requirement is different, so comparing two planets' totals directly is misleading. The right way is the ratio — divide the strength obtained by the strength required. Above 1, the planet passes its own test; the planet with the highest ratio is the most capable one in the chart.
An example: Saturn with 6 rupas (needs 5) is strong at a ratio of 1.2, while Mercury with 6.5 rupas (needs 7) is slightly weak at 0.93 — even though its total is higher.
A strong planet is not a «benefic» planet
This is the most common mistake. Shadbala tells you how forcefully a planet will give its results — whether those results are pleasant or hard is decided by its house lordship, placement and yogas. A strong 6th or 8th lord gives its own matters just as firmly.
In the same way a weak planet is not «useless»; in its matters results come late, incomplete or with more labour. In the dasha of such a planet, patience and methodical effort are advised.
Use in prediction
In practice Shadbala answers these questions. The «Shadbala» section of our free Kundali gives the strength of all seven planets ready-made:
- Dasha results — the mahadasha of a strong planet keeps its promises; in a weak planet's dasha the results arrive reduced
- A tug-of-war between two planets — in a conjunction or between conflicting indications, the stronger planet prevails
- Which of the Lagna, Moon and Sun is strongest — the pivot of the reading is chosen from that
- Ishta and Kashta Phala — derived from the exaltation strength and Cheshta Bala, they show whether comfort or struggle weighs more in the planet's dasha
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How much Shadbala is considered good?
Each planet has its own minimum — Sun 6.5, Moon 6, Mars 5, Mercury 7, Jupiter 6.5, Venus 5.5 and Saturn 5 rupas. If the strength obtained is higher than that (a ratio above 1), the planet is considered strong.
Does a planet strong in Shadbala always give good results?
No. Strength only tells you how forcefully the planet will give results; the nature of those results is decided by its house lordship, placement and yogas.
Why is there no Shadbala for Rahu and Ketu?
The classical Shadbala calculation is given for the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets; their strength is usually judged from their sign lord and the planets placed with them.
⚠️ Shadbala measures a planet's capacity, not the direction of the outcome — always draw conclusions together with the houses, the dasha and the yogas.
