In the naamkaran sanskar the child receives the name that will be their lifelong identity — and, as the namank, their number too — so both the day and the first letter are chosen well.
Tradition prefers the 11th or 12th day after birth; failing that, the 101st day or any auspicious day before the first birthday. Good nakshatras: Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana and Revati.
The first letter comes from the pada of the child's birth nakshatra — Rohini's padas, for example, give O, Va, Vi, Vu. Our nakshatra calculator and rashi-wise baby-names section list exactly these.
Amavasya, rikta tithis, Bhadra and Rahu Kaal; if mother or child is unwell, the shastra allows moving the day — well-being outranks the muhurta.
