Mundan (chudakarana) removes the birth-hair, freeing the child of womb-imprints — it is a rite on a tender child, so along with the day's purity, season and the child's health are weighed.
Tradition prefers the odd years — the 1st, 3rd, 5th or 7th. Uttarayana, and the months from Magha to Jyeshtha, are favourable; Chaturmas is usually avoided.
Mundan nakshatras: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishtha and Revati. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are good; avoid Tuesday and Saturday.
Many traditions skip the child's birth month, and a time when the mother is in the fifth month of pregnancy; Bhadra, Amavasya, rikta tithis and Rahu Kaal are always barred. If done at a tirtha by family custom, that place's rite prevails.

Can mundan be on the birthday?
Do it in a good nakshatra-day once the odd year begins — the shastra insists on a clean muhurta, not the exact birth date.
Is mundan done for girls?
In many families yes (chudakarana is a sanskar for all), in some no — it is a family-tradition matter and the shastra honours both.
What happens to the hair?
Traditionally it is offered to flowing water or at a tirtha — follow your purohit's guidance.
