What are the 36 Gunas — Ashtakoota matching explained

Vedic marriage matching tests the bride's and groom's birth nakshatra and Moon sign on eight criteria (Ashtakoota) — each koota carries its own points, and the eight together total 36 gunas:

• Varna (1 point) — spiritual compatibility of temperament
• Vashya (2) — mutual pull and influence
• Tara (3) — fortune-match by counting nakshatra-taras both ways
• Yoni (4) — instinctive nature and intimacy (friendship of the 14 yonis)
• Graha-Maitri (5) — friendship of the two Moon-sign lords
• Gana (6) — the Deva-Manushya-Rakshasa temperament classes
• Bhakoot (7) — mutual distance of the signs (6-8, 2-12, 5-9 count as dosha)
• Nadi (8) — Adya-Madhya-Antya; the same nadi is the heaviest dosha

How many gunas are "good"?

Tradition does not recommend a match below 18; 18-24 is moderate (weigh the other tests), 25-32 good, 32+ excellent. But the score alone never decides — the Nadi and Bhakoot doshas outweigh even a high total, and the shastras also give their pariharas (cancellations): same nakshatra with different padas, or sign-lords who are mutual friends or one planet, pacify these doshas.
