What is Mangal Dosha — and when does it form?

A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna. The South-Indian tradition counts the 2nd house too, and a complete check reads the same placement from the Moon and from Venus as well — formed from all three it is strong, from only one it is mild. The reason is classical: these houses govern married happiness (7th), family comfort (4th), longevity and shared life (8th), bed-comforts (12th) and one's own temperament (1st) — a fierce Mars seated here lends haste, friction and clash to married life.

The effect — understanding, not fear

Being Manglik is no curse — roughly every third chart turns out Manglik by some count. Its practical meaning is only this: episodes of anger and ego are likelier in married life, so the choice of partner and the matching deserve extra care. And a strong, well-placed Mars (own signs Aries-Scorpio, exalted Capricorn, or lord of a kendra-trikona) turns this same energy into courage, property and protection.

When the dosha cancels — the classical pariharas

The shastra gives the dosha its cancellations too — the main ones:

Both Manglik — when bride's and groom's charts are both Manglik, the dosha balances out; this is the most accepted parihara.
Mars in own/exalted/friendly sign — Mars in Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn, Leo, Sagittarius or Pisces greatly reduces the dosha.
Benefic aspect — Jupiter's or Venus' glance on Mars blunts its edge.
Balance in the other chart — a malefic like Saturn or Rahu in the same houses of the partner's chart is also read as a balance.
The age view — several traditions hold the dosha weakens after the 28th year; this is a tradition-difference, not accepted by all teachers — we treat it as supporting opinion, never decisive.

Folk practice also knows symbolic rites like Kumbh Vivah / Vishnu Vivah, and the classical remedy of Mangal Shanti (1.25 lakh japa of Mars with havan) — but the first step is always to have the dosha's intensity measured properly, for most "Manglik" charts prove mild even before the pariharas.

FAQ

Can a Manglik never marry a non-Manglik?
They can — if the dosha is mild, pariharas apply and the rest of the matching (36 gunas, Nadi, the 7th house) is good. The bar exists only for a strong dosha with zero parihara.

What is a partial (anshik) Manglik?
When Mars occupies these houses but from its own or exalted sign, or under benefic aspect, or only by the Moon-count — the dosha is then partial, and the decision rests on the rest of the chart.
