👩👧👦 Jivitputrika Vrat (Jiutiya / Jitiya) Puja Vidhi — step by step
This is the household vidhi — three days: Nahay-Khay and Othgan on Saptami, waterless and the worship of Jimutavahana on Ashtami, paran on Navami.
How to do Jivitputrika Vrat (Jiutiya / Jitiya) — the steps
- Saptami — Nahay-Khay: a bath in the river/at home in the morning, cleaning the house, one sattvic meal (madua roti, noni saag, jhingni curry, arwa rice, dahi-chura — no onion-garlic); a share of the meal for the ancestors and grandmother (Pitru Paksha).
- Saptami night/dawn — Othgan (Sargahi): the last food and water before the Ashtami begins (tithi window above — usually 2-4 at night) — dahi-chura, fruit, sweets, water; many homes before sleeping; nothing after this — 24 hours waterless from here.
- Ashtami — the waterless fast: no food or water all day; no sleeping in the day (strict), katha-bhajan; the puja in the evening (Pradosh) — an idol of Jimutavahana in kusha/clay (or a picture), a kite (chilhi) and she-jackal (siyaro) in clay/cow dung, a water-filled kalash/clay pot, the Jiutiya thread (red-yellow, strung with gold-silver Jiutiya).
- Puja: incense-lamp-akshat-flowers for Jimutavahana, kheer-poori/paddy-jaggery (dry) for the kite and she-jackal, turmeric-sindoor for the Jiutiya thread; hearing the katha (Jimutavahana + the kite and she-jackal — below); the folk prayer to 'Surya-kite-she-jackal'; finally the thread around the neck (the mother, and the children too — some homes).
- The vrat night: a vigil/bhajans (if possible), no water; in extreme weakness/dizziness take a sip of water — no vrat is greater than life (FAQ below).
- Navami — paran: after sunrise, when the Ashtami has ended (above) — first the Jiutiya prasad/water, then the meal — jhor-bhaat (rice + a gravied curry of madua/jhingni/noni saag), dahi-chura, kerao, kheer-poori; many homes have 5-7 kinds of vegetables at the paran; feed the children first.
- The Jiutiya thread: around the neck at least until the next vrat; if it breaks, into water; a new thread in the puja each year; a daughter's first Jiutiya after marriage from her parental home (thread-bangles-clothes — the 'Jiutiya sinjara').
- Charity: the vrat prasad and grain-clothes to a Brahmin woman/poor woman on Navami; the Pitru Paksha tarpan alongside (the men of the house).

Madua roti, noni saag, jhingni, dahi-chura, jhor-bhaat — the kitchen of Nahay-Khay and the paran
The food of Jiutiya is the traditional nourishing kitchen of Bihar-Jharkhand — madua (ragi — iron and calcium), noni saag (gaiya saag), jhingni (ridge gourd), kerao, arwa rice, dahi-chura at Nahay-Khay and the paran; dahi-chura-sweets-fruit at Othgan; nothing during the fast. Below with recipes.
- Madua roti (ragi flour kneaded with warm water, on the griddle, with ghee), noni saag bhujia (mustard oil, no garlic — no onion-garlic in the vrat meal)
- Jhingni (ridge gourd) curry/jhor, kerao (dried pea) ghughni, arwa rice, arhar dal
- Dahi-chura (Othgan and paran), jaggery, banana, kheer-poori (puja naivedya), thekua (some homes)
- The paran jhor-bhaat: rice + a gravied curry of ridge gourd/noni/pumpkin + curd; the tradition of 5-7 vegetables (some homes)
- UP (Purvanchal): poori-kheer-cucumber on Jiutiya, curd-lai at Othgan; Jharkhand: madua-marcha, noni saag; Nepal-Terai: madua roti, no fish (in the vrat home)
- On the vrat day: nothing (waterless); a sip of water in extreme weakness; pregnant/unwell mothers a fruit form
Rules — do's and don'ts
✅ Do
- Nahay-Khay on Saptami, Othgan before the Ashtami begins (plenty of water, dahi-chura, fruit), waterless on Ashtami, paran after sunrise on Navami (tithi window above)
- Worship of Jimutavahana (kusha) + the kite and she-jackal, both kathas; the Jiutiya thread around the neck
- Feed the children first at the paran; jhor-bhaat/madua — nourishing; distribute prasad
- Mind Pitru Paksha — a share of Nahay-Khay for the ancestors and grandmother; charity on the vrat day
- The daughter's first Jiutiya sinjara (thread-bangles-sari) from the parental home
❌ Don't
- No Othgan/water after the Ashtami begins — the vrat is regarded as broken (the she-jackal's tale); but take water if life is at risk
- Pregnant, diabetic, heart-patient and breastfeeding mothers should not keep it waterless — the fruit form, the same sankalp
- No onion-garlic-meat-fish in the vrat meals (Nahay-Khay/paran); nothing tamasic
- No throwing away the Jiutiya thread if it breaks — put it in water, wear a new consecrated one
- No sleeping in the day on the vrat day (strict form), quarrels or scolding the children — love for the very ones the vrat is for
Vrat katha

Frequently asked questions
When is Jiutiya in {Y} — Nahay-Khay, waterless, paran?
This year's Ashwin Krishna Ashtami (the waterless day) date and tithi window (Delhi) are above — Nahay-Khay a day earlier (Saptami), Othgan before the Ashtami begins (tithi start above), paran the next day (Navami) after sunrise when the Ashtami has ended; the udaya tithi rule in Bihar — if there is a two-day confusion, confirm with a panchang/priest.
Why 24 hours waterless? Can water be taken?
In tradition the whole Ashtami is waterless (from Othgan to paran); the tale of the kite and she-jackal teaches faithfulness; but no vrat is greater than life — pregnant, unwell, breastfeeding and elderly mothers take water/fruit, the sankalp and puja the same — the scriptures say a vrat 'as strength allows'; take water at once if dizzy/vomiting.
When to do Othgan (Sargahi)?
Before the Ashtami tithi begins — before sleeping on Saptami night or rising before dawn (usually 2-4) for dahi-chura-fruit-sweets-plenty of water; see the tithi start above — nothing after that; many homes count until before sunrise (household custom).
What is the Jiutiya thread, how long to wear it?
A red-yellow cotton thread strung with a small gold/silver 'Jiutiya' (a locket symbolising Jimutavahana) — offered in the puja and worn around the mother's neck (the children's too — some homes); until the next year's vrat or at least a few days; new each year, the old one into water; the daughter's first thread from her parental home.
Is this vrat for daughters too?
Yes — the name says 'putrika' but the vrat is for all children (sons and daughters); in modern homes mothers keep it for both daughter and son, in places for adopted children/nephews and nieces too; the 'seven sons' in the kite and she-jackal tale is the folk form, the spirit is all children.
What is the difference between Ahoi Ashtami and Jiutiya?
Both are mothers' vrats for children, both on a Krishna Ashtami — Jiutiya in Ashwin (in Pitru Paksha, Bihar-UP-Jharkhand-Nepal, 24 hours waterless, worship of Jimutavahana), Ahoi in Kartika (4 days after Karwa Chauth, north-west India, waterless until the stars appear, worship of Ahoi Mata-Syahu); many Purvanchali-Delhi families keep both.
