This is the household vidhi of the Tuesday vrat (Hanuman); pacifying Mars and the customs of the Shravana Mangalagaur/Mangala Gauri at the end.

How to do Tuesday Vrat (Hanuman) and Mangalagaur — the steps

  1. Morning: bathe, red/saffron clothes; sankalp — 'the vrat of 21 Tuesdays, for (wish), one meal'; at a Hanuman temple or the Hanuman picture/idol at home — the chola of sindoor and jasmine oil (or a tilak), red flowers and garland (hibiscus-marigold), red cloth-langot, the sacred thread, paan-supari, the bhog of boondi/besan laddoo and banana-jaggery-gram, Tulsi leaves; a lamp of ghee/jasmine oil; the Hanuman Chalisa (1/7/11 times), the Bajrang Baan/Sundarkand (if possible), 'Om Ham Hanumate Namah' 108 times; the aarti 'Aarti kije Hanuman lala ki'.
  2. During the day: fruit or one sweet meal (evening) — many homes without salt (jaggery-sweet: laddoo-halwa-sweet roti-jaggery rice); celibacy, no anger or lies, no cutting hair and nails (some customs); japa of Rama's name.
  3. Evening: a lamp (jasmine oil) at the Hanuman temple, reading the Sundarkand/Ramcharitmanas, aarti; hear the vrat katha (below — the Brahmin couple/Mangal); distribute prasad — boondi laddoo, jaggery-gram; then the meal.
  4. Pacifying Mars (Manglik/Mars affliction): on Tuesday red masoor, jaggery, red cloth, a copper vessel, red flowers, batasha — given to the poor/at a Hanuman temple; 'Om Am Angarakaya Namah' 108 times or the Mangal stotra (the Rina Mochan Mangal Stotra — for freedom from debt); rice and jaggery for the cow; planting a sapling since Mars is the Earth's son; coral on a priest's advice; the Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach; special on Bhauma Pradosh/Angarki.
  5. The udyapan of 21 Tuesdays: on the 21st (or 22nd) Tuesday 21 boondi laddoos/churma, a red flag, chola and langot offered at the Hanuman temple, the Sundarkand reading, feeding a Brahmin/21 children, charity (red cloth-jaggery-gram); then the vrat continues as one wishes; if missed, count from the next Tuesday (strict custom: restart).
  6. Mangalagaur (Maharashtra — the Tuesdays of Shravana): the new bride bathes in the morning, a new sari, chuda, green bangles; installing the idol of Gauri (Annapurna)/a betel nut, sixteen patri (bel, durva, Tulsi, aghada, kewda, chafa, jaswand, shami, dhotra…) and sixteen flowers, haldi-kunku, the naivedya of sixteen karanjya/puran poli; the katha (Mangalagaurichi kahani), the aarti 'Jai Devi Mangalagauri'; haldi-kunku and vaan (gifts) for the married women (of both families); the night-long vigil — jhimma, phugadi, pinga, bas-phugadi, ukhane, songs; the immersion/uttar puja the next morning; the udyapan in the fifth year (vaan for the mother and mother-in-law).

Rules — do's and don'ts

✅ Do

  • Sindoor and jasmine oil, red flowers and boondi laddoo for Hanuman; the Chalisa/Sundarkand; one sweet meal
  • A vow of 21 Tuesdays → udyapan (21 laddoos, flag, feeding children); consecutive, without a gap
  • Mangal dosha: the gift of red masoor-jaggery-red cloth, the Mangal stotra, a sapling; a chart check first
  • The Shravana Tuesday: Mangalagaur (new brides)/Mangala Gauri (married women) — sixteens, friends, the katha
  • Celibacy, distance from anger and lies — Mars is a fierce planet, restraint alone pacifies it

❌ Don't

  • No meat, liquor, onion-garlic on Tuesday, no lending or borrowing, no haste over a new vehicle/land (folk belief), no cutting hair and nails (some customs)
  • No black clothes in Hanuman puja, no bhog without charanamrit-Tulsi (Tulsi is dear), no superstition of a man-woman divide (the Chalisa and lamp are for all)
  • No abandoning the vrat midway; no distress to the sick and pregnant in the name of a saltless fast
  • No coral without a chart check; no marriage decisions out of fear of 'Manglik' — match with a priest/astrology report
  • No trouble to the neighbours from noise at the Mangalagaur vigil; no unsafe play

Frequently asked questions

When is the next Tuesday vrat and when are the Sawan Tuesdays of {Y}?

The list above has the next 12 Tuesdays — those marked 'Mangalagaur (Shravana Tuesday)' are the Sawan Tuesdays (the Purnimanta Shravana — north India; Maharashtra's Amanta Shravana begins 15 days later — its Tuesdays are the list's Shravana Shukla Tuesdays plus the following ones (Purnimanta Bhadrapada Krishna, i.e. Amanta Shravana Krishna)); begin the 21-Tuesday vrat on any Tuesday (Shukla Paksha best).

How many Tuesday vrats, what rules, salt?

A vow of 21 (about 5 months) or 45 Tuesdays; the morning Hanuman puja (chola-laddoo-Chalisa), one meal — sweet/saltless by tradition (jaggery-halwa-sweet roti), many homes rock salt; celibacy; 21 laddoos-flag-feeding children at the udyapan; the sick and pregnant eat normally and keep only the puja and Chalisa.

What is Mangal dosha (Manglik), and does the Tuesday vrat pacify it?

Mars in the 1st-4th-7th-8th-12th house from the ascendant in the chart = Manglik (the folk belief of delay/discord in marriage; many exceptions — Mars in own/exalted sign, Jupiter's aspect, weakening after 28); the remedies — the Tuesday vrat, Hanuman worship, the gift of red masoor-jaggery-red cloth-copper, the Mangal stotra, the Ujjain Mangalnath bhaat puja, the kumbh vivah (some), coral (from a priest); confirm first from the chart (a Manglik report) — not out of fear.

What is Mangalagaur and who keeps it?

The new bride of Maharashtra worships Gauri-Annapurna on every Tuesday of Shravana (Amanta) — sixteen patri and flowers, haldi-kunku, karanjya; inviting the married women and friends of both families for night-long jhimma-phugadi-pinga-ukhane; the first five years of marriage (the first year at the parental home, the rest at the in-laws' — customs differ), the udyapan in the fifth year; the husband's long life and good fortune; now communal Mangalagaur programmes in the cities.

How to do the Mangala Gauri vrat (north)?

On every Tuesday of Sawan married women/girls worship Parvati (Mangala Gauri) — 16 of each item (laddoos, fruit, flowers, paan, supari, cloves, cardamom, bangles, 16 flour lamps — 16 wicks), suhag items, the katha (the merchant's son's life of 16 years lengthened by the vrat), aarti; one meal; the udyapan after 5 years/when able; the long life of husband and children, pacifying Mangal dosha.

Can women worship Hanuman?

Yes — the Hanuman Chalisa, lamp, laddoo, Sundarkand and the Tuesday vrat are for all; in some temple traditions touching the idol/offering the chola is done by men (Hanuman is a brahmachari — the scriptures do not forbid women's worship, Mother Sita herself); women may offer the chola/sindoor from a distance; remembrance and japa during menstruation.
