The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts, and the night from sunset to the next sunrise into eight more — each part is one Choghadiya (about four ghatis, roughly an hour and a half). There are seven kinds: Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char are auspicious; Udveg, Rog and Kaal are inauspicious. It is consulted most in Gujarat, Rajasthan and central India for travel, starting a business and buying or selling.
The day begins with Udveg on Sunday, Amrit on Monday, Rog on Tuesday, Labh on Wednesday, Shubh on Thursday, Char on Friday and Kaal on Saturday; the rest follow a fixed cycle. The first night Choghadiya follows a separate rule, which is why the day and night tables of the same weekday look different.
A Choghadiya's length depends on the length of the day, and day length changes with each city's latitude and longitude. The sun rises in Guwahati about 50 minutes before Delhi and later in Ahmedabad — so the first auspicious Choghadiya in the table below is different for every city. Char is considered moderately auspicious — good for travel and anything that moves (vehicles, journeys), but for lasting work such as a house-warming or laying a foundation, Amrit, Shubh or Labh are better.
Do not begin new work, a journey, a financial transaction or an auspicious ceremony in these three. Work already in progress need not be stopped.
Tradition treats Rahu Kaal as the stronger prohibition — where the two overlap, start the new auspicious work after Rahu Kaal ends.
