In a havan the fire carries the offerings to the gods, so before a yajna one checks where Agni “dwells” that day. The traditional rule is simple: take the tithi (counting 1 from Shukla Pratipada), add twice the weekday number (Sunday = 1 … Saturday = 7) and divide by 4.
Formula: remainder of (tithi + 2 × weekday) ÷ 4
| Remainder | Vasa (abode) | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 or 3 | Earth (Bhu-loka) | Havan auspicious — happiness & success |
| 0 (4) | Sky (Akasha) | Avoid havan |
| 2 | Netherworld (Patala) | Inauspicious — loss feared |
Remainder 1 or 3 means Agni is on Earth — the havan succeeds and brings happiness; remainder 0 (i.e. 4) means the sky — such days are avoided; remainder 2 means Patala — the havan bears no fruit and loss is feared. In emergencies (for example eclipse-shanti) Agnivasa is not considered.
Before Rudrabhishek one checks Shiva’s “abode”. Rule: multiply the tithi by 2, add 5 and divide by 7. Remainder 1 → Kailash, 2 → with Gauri, 3 → on Nandi, 4 → in the assembly, 5 → at the meal, 6 → at play, 0/7 → at the cremation ground.
Formula: remainder of (tithi × 2 + 5) ÷ 7 — the abode for every tithi below
| Paksha | Tithi | Vasa (abode) | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shukla | Pratipada | At the cremation ground | grave harm (forbidden) |

Abhishek during Kailash, Gauri and Nandi brings happiness, prosperity and fulfilment of wishes; during the meal it removes pain; in the assembly it brings distress, at play hardship, and at the cremation ground it is forbidden. In Shravan month, on Pradosh, on Mahashivratri and at a Jyotirlinga, Shivavasa need not be considered.
Half of a tithi is a “karana”; among the 11 karanas, “Vishti” is called Bhadra. It comes about eight times a month — in the first half of Shukla Ashtami and Purnima, the second half of Shukla Chaturthi and Ekadashi; the second half of Krishna Tritiya and Dashami, and the first half of Krishna Saptami and Chaturdashi.
Marriage, mundan, griha-pravesh, starting a business, travel, Rakshabandhan and Holika-dahan are avoided in Bhadra; harsh tasks such as litigation, subduing enemies or surgery may be done. When the Moon is in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius or Pisces the Bhadra belongs to the earth-world (strongest); in Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Scorpio to heaven; in the remaining signs to the netherworld — the heaven/netherworld Bhadra is considered much milder.
When the Moon travels from the third pada of Dhanishtha to the end of Revati (through Aquarius and Pisces), those roughly five days are “Panchak”. Its type is named after the weekday it begins on: Sunday — Roga (disease) Panchak, Monday — Raja Panchak, Tuesday — Agni Panchak, Friday — Chora (theft) Panchak, Saturday — Mrityu (death) Panchak; Panchak starting on Wednesday or Thursday is considered harmless.
Five acts are avoided in Panchak — cremation (if unavoidable, five dough effigies are cremated with the body), travel towards the south, gathering wood or fuel, laying a roof, and weaving a cot or bed. Marriage, engagement, ordinary travel, worship and shopping are not prohibited.
Where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins in the zodiac lie six nakshatras — Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati (ruled by Mercury and Ketu) — called “Gandamool”. A child born in them traditionally receives a Gandamool-shanti.
The shanti is performed on the 27th day after birth, when the same nakshatra returns — an abhishek with water from 27 wells/tirthas and leaves of 27 trees; by folk custom the father does not look at the child’s face until then. Not every Gandamool birth is harmful: the first pada of Mula and the last pada of Jyeshtha are considered most afflicted, the other padas mild or even favourable. When a day is marked “Gandamool” it simply means the Moon is in one of these six nakshatras that day.
A havan is auspicious and successful when Agni dwells on Earth (Bhu-loka). It is avoided when Agni is in the sky, and loss is feared when Agni is in Patala. A havan in Shukla paksha is considered better than in Krishna paksha.
Rudrabhishek is best during Kailash-vasa, Gauri-vasa and Nandi-vasa; it may also be done during the meal (relief from pain). It is not done during the assembly, play or cremation-ground vasa. On Shravan Mondays, Pradosh and Mahashivratri the Shivavasa need not be checked.
Marriage, griha-pravesh, mundan, starting a business, travel, tying rakhi and Holika-dahan are avoided in Bhadra. If the Bhadra belongs to heaven or the netherworld (Moon in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio or in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Virgo, Libra) its effect is considered mild.
Five acts are avoided: cremation, travel to the south, gathering wood or fuel, laying a roof and weaving a cot. Marriage, engagement, worship, shopping and ordinary travel are allowed during Panchak.
