Name-Rashi (Zodiac sign), Ghati-Hour, Chinese Rashi (Zodiac sign) — Instant free calculation; 10+ more and Vedic tools below
The eight calculators above run on classical rules: the name-letter table, the planet-gem correspondences, number friendships and the astronomical computation of Swiss Ephemeris. Nothing you type is stored. Below, what each one computes and how, together with the reference tables they run on.
The 27 nakshatras with 4 padas each give 108 name letters; the pada that holds the first letter of the name is the name-nakshatra and pada, and nine padas make one rashi. When the birth time is unknown this “name rashi” is used in matching, horoscopes and naming; when birth details exist, the moon sign of the chart is the authority. The full table is below.
The Vedic day holds 60 ghatis from sunrise: 1 ghati = 24 minutes, 1 pala = 24 seconds, 2 ghatis = 1 muhurta (48 minutes). Minutes = ghati × 24 + pala × 0.4; in reverse, minutes ÷ 24 = ghatis and the remainder × 2.5 = palas. Old birth records write the ishtakaal in ghati-pala; add it to that day's sunrise to get the clock time.
The moolank is the digit sum of the birth day (reduced to one digit); the bhagyank is the digit sum of the full birth date. Each number has a planet and friendly or hostile numbers (the Cheiro system); the digits of the phone number are summed to one digit and checked against both. Numbers friendly to both the moolank and the bhagyank are the most favourable.
The rashi lord decides which mukhi suits you: Sun 1, Moon 2, Mars 3, Mercury 4, Jupiter 5, Venus 6, Saturn 7, Rahu 8, Ketu 9 mukhi. The five-mukhi (Kalagni Rudra) is universal and anyone may wear it. Have the bead consecrated and mind the planet's weekday before wearing.
Every planet has its numeric yantra (the standard Navagraha design), and the yantra of the rashi lord is suggested for that rashi. Principal yantras by purpose: Shri (prosperity), Mahamrityunjaya (health), Saraswati (learning), Kubera (wealth), Navagraha (pacifying all planets). Install it with the proper rite in an auspicious muhurta.
The nine gems follow the planets: ruby for the Sun, pearl for the Moon, red coral for Mars, emerald for Mercury, yellow sapphire for Jupiter, diamond for Venus, blue sapphire for Saturn, hessonite for Rahu, cat's eye for Ketu. The calculator gives the rashi lord's gem, its substitute, metal, finger and day. This is general advice at rashi level; the final choice depends on the ascendant, dasha and planetary strength, and blue sapphire, hessonite and cat's eye are never worn without a trial.
The ayanamsa is the angle between the tropical (sayana) and sidereal (nirayana) zodiacs, about 24° now and growing by roughly 50.3 arc-seconds a year. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the Indian government standard; KP, Raman, Yukteshwar and others differ by some minutes of arc, which can shift a planet's degree and occasionally its nakshatra pada. Values come from Swiss Ephemeris at 12:00 UT.
The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig; the remainder of (birth year − 4) ÷ 12 gives the animal. Chinese New Year falls in January or February, so for births in those months check the previous year too. It is independent of the Western and Vedic zodiacs, offered as an interesting reference.

The pada that holds the first letter of the name gives the name-nakshatra and its rashi (nine padas make one rashi). The same table runs the “rashi from name” calculator above and the name option in kundali matching.
The first letter of the name is looked up in the 108-letter table, one letter for each of the four padas of every nakshatra. The pada found is the nakshatra-pada, and nine padas make one rashi. For example “Chu, Che, Cho, La” are the four padas of Ashwini, in Aries (Mesh).
The moon sign of the chart cast from the birth details (date, time, place) is the authority; the name rashi is used only when the birth time is unknown or the name was given on the birth nakshatra's letter. Many families choose the birth-nakshatra letter at naming, and then the two coincide.
24 minutes. 60 ghatis = 24 hours; 1 ghati = 60 palas (24 seconds each); 2 ghatis = 1 muhurta = 48 minutes. If a birth record gives the ishtakaal in ghati-pala, multiply by 24 and add to the sunrise time.
The gem of the rashi lord: red coral for Aries and Scorpio, diamond for Taurus and Libra, emerald for Gemini and Virgo, pearl for Cancer, ruby for Leo, yellow sapphire for Sagittarius and Pisces, blue sapphire for Capricorn and Aquarius (table above). This is general advice at rashi level; strong gems such as blue sapphire only after a chart reading and a trial.
By the rashi lord: Sun 1, Moon 2, Mars 3, Mercury 4, Jupiter 5, Venus 6, Saturn 7 mukhi; Rahu 8 and Ketu 9. The five-mukhi is considered safe for everyone. Have the bead consecrated before wearing.
The angle between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, about 24° at present. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the standard of India's Calendar Reform Committee and most Indian software and panchangs use it; KP and Raman differ by a few minutes of arc. Every chart on this site is computed with Lahiri.
