Guru (Jupiter) is considered the significator of knowledge, teachers, children, dharma, fortune, wealth, marriage (husband in a woman's chart) and liver. When Guru is weak or afflicted in the kundali, or its difficult dasha is running, tradition recommends its mantra japa, charity and the worship of its presiding deity. Below are all four kinds of Guru mantras with meaning, the japa method and remedies.

Beej (seed) mantra
ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः॥
Om Gram Grim Graum Sah Gurave Namah ||
The tantric beej mantra of Guru — salutations to Guru with three seed syllables. By tradition this is the form most chanted for graha-shanti.
Laghu (simple) mantra
ॐ बृं बृहस्पतये नमः॥
Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah ||
The short, simple mantra of Guru — for daily japa; anyone can chant it.
Vedic mantra
ॐ बृहस्पते अति यदर्यो अर्हाद्द्युमद्विभाति क्रतुमज्जनेषु। यद्दीदयच्छवस ऋतप्रजात तदस्मासु द्रविणं धेहि चित्रम्॥
Om Brihaspate Ati Yadaryo Arhaddyumadvibhati Kratumajjaneshu | Yaddidayachchhavasa Ritaprajata Tadasmasu Dravinam Dhehi Chitram ||
The Vedic verse of Guru (Rigveda 2.23.15; Shukla Yajurveda 26.3) — this is the verse given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra for Guru-shanti; chant it with correct pronunciation, ideally after learning it from an acharya.
Pauranik mantra (Navagraha Stotra)
देवानां च ऋषीणां च गुरुं काञ्चनसन्निभम्। बुद्धिभूतं त्रिलोकेशं तं नमामि बृहस्पतिम्॥
Devanam Cha Rishinam Cha Gurum Kanchanasannibham | Buddhibhutam Trilokesham Tam Namami Brihaspatim ||
The Guru verse of the Navagraha Stotra by Maharshi Vyasa: I bow to Brihaspati — guru of the gods and sages, golden in hue, the embodiment of wisdom, lord of the three worlds.

Beej and laghu mantras — the graha-shanti tradition; Vedic verse — as given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (ch. 84), text checked against Rigveda 2.23.15; Shukla Yajurveda 26.3; Pauranik — the Navagraha Stotra composed by Vyasa.

💡 Essence

The purpose of chanting Guru's mantra is not to «please» the planet, but to awaken its good qualities (knowledge) in your own life and to gain the strength to bear its difficult results.

🪔 How to chant / recite

  1. Start: Take a sankalpa and begin on the first Thursday of the bright fortnight (shukla paksha), or on any Thursday.
  2. Time: Morning after bath; Thursday is special.
  3. Seat & direction: On a woollen/kusha asana, facing north-east (ishan) (or east/north).
  4. Mala & count: One mala (108) of the beej or laghu mantra daily; by tradition the total count for the beej mantra is 19,000 — do such a big anushthan only after checking the kundali and under an acharya's guidance.
  5. Conclusion: At the end of the anushthan, the tradition is a havan of one-tenth the japa count, charity (chana dal (gram), turmeric, yellow cloth) and feeding a brahmin/someone in need.

🛕 Puja vidhi (step by step)

🧺 Items needed

  • Picture of Bhagwan Vishnu / Shri Krishna / Satyanarayan
  • Yellow flowers and yellow cloth
  • Tulsi leaves (essential)
  • Sandalwood, akshata
  • Panchamrit, conch
  • Ghee lamp, incense
  • Banana, panjiri or yellow sweets as bhog

🪷 Procedure

  1. Bathe and wear clean clothes; clean the puja place and spread a fresh cloth on the altar (chowki).
  2. Do achamana (sip water three times) and purify hands and mouth; sit on an asana and calm the mind.
  3. Light a lamp of ghee or sesame oil — by tradition the lamp is kept to the deity's right.
  4. Take water, akshata (unbroken rice) and a flower in the right hand and make the sankalpa — your name, gotra, place, date and the purpose of the puja, spoken or in the mind; then let the water fall to the ground.
  5. First remember Shri Ganesha (Om Gam Ganapataye Namah).
  6. Bathe the Lord with water from a conch (or sprinkle), offer yellow cloth, sandalwood and yellow flowers.
  7. Always place a tulsi leaf on the bhog — by tradition Vishnu does not accept bhog without tulsi.
  8. Chant «Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya» or recite Vishnu Sahasranama / Satyanarayan Katha.
  9. Sing «Om Jai Jagdish Hare».
  10. Finally perform aarti, offer pushpanjali (flowers) and do parikrama (or turn around in your place).
  11. Ask forgiveness for any mistakes in the puja, distribute the prasad and take it yourself.

⚠️ Rules & precautions

  • On Ekadashi grains (especially rice) are given up; tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi — pluck a day earlier.
  • Thursday, Ekadashi and Purnima are special for Vishnu.
  • Sesame is offered instead of rice (akshata) in some traditions — a regional difference.

🎁 Items to donate (on Thursday)

  • Chana dal (gram)
  • Turmeric
  • Yellow cloth
  • Saffron
  • Religious books

🌿 Other remedies for Guru

  • Worship Vishnu on Thursdays and offer water to a banana plant (as per tradition).
  • Respect gurus, teachers and learned people.
  • Keep the Thursday fast; wear yellow and eat yellow food.
  • Study scriptures and donate.

🌟 Benefits (as per tradition)

  • A prayer for favourable results in the areas Guru signifies — knowledge, teachers, children, dharma, fortune, wealth, marriage (husband in a woman's chart) and liver.
  • Strength of mind and patience during a difficult dasha/antardasha of the planet.

These are traditional beliefs described in scriptures; results are understood to depend on faith, discipline and one's own actions.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How many times should the Guru mantra be chanted?

One mala (108) daily; tradition prescribes an anushthan of 19,000 japa in total, completed over many days.

Which should I chant — beej, Vedic or Pauranik?

For regular japa the laghu or beej mantra is easiest; the Vedic mantra needs correct pronunciation — learn it from an acharya; the Pauranik verse is for meditation and praise.

Is it necessary to wear Yellow Sapphire?

No; wear a gemstone only on the advice of a qualified astrologer after examining the kundali — a wrong gemstone can even harm. Mantra japa and charity are safe remedies for everyone.

How do I know if Guru is weak?

Look at Guru's sign, house, strength and dasha in your kundali — make a free kundali on Nakshtra Tak or ask an astrologer.
