Mangal (Mars) is considered the significator of courage, energy, land and property, younger siblings, blood, sports and valour. When Mangal is weak or afflicted in the kundali, or its difficult dasha is running, tradition recommends its mantra japa, charity and the worship of its presiding deity. Below are all four kinds of Mangal mantras with meaning, the japa method and remedies.

Beej (seed) mantra
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः॥
Om Kram Krim Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah ||
The tantric beej mantra of Mangal — salutations to Mangal with three seed syllables. By tradition this is the form most chanted for graha-shanti.
Laghu (simple) mantra
ॐ अं अंगारकाय नमः॥
Om Am Angarakaya Namah ||
The short, simple mantra of Mangal — for daily japa; anyone can chant it.
Vedic mantra
ॐ अग्निर्मूर्धा दिवः ककुत्पतिः पृथिव्या अयम्। अपां रेतांसि जिन्वति॥
Om Agnirmurdha Divah Kakutpatih Prithivya Ayam | Apam Retansi Jinvati ||
The Vedic verse of Mangal (Rigveda 8.44.16; Shukla Yajurveda 13.14) — this is the verse given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra for Mangal-shanti; chant it with correct pronunciation, ideally after learning it from an acharya.
Pauranik mantra (Navagraha Stotra)
धरणीगर्भसम्भूतं विद्युत्कान्तिसमप्रभम्। कुमारं शक्तिहस्तं तं मंगलं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥
Dharanigarbhasambhutam Vidyutkantisamaprabham | Kumaram Shaktihastam Tam Mangalam Pranamamyaham ||
The Mangal verse of the Navagraha Stotra by Maharshi Vyasa: I bow to Mars — born of the Earth's womb, brilliant like lightning, youthful, holding a spear.

Beej and laghu mantras — the graha-shanti tradition; Vedic verse — as given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (ch. 84), text checked against Rigveda 8.44.16; Shukla Yajurveda 13.14; Pauranik — the Navagraha Stotra composed by Vyasa.

💡 Essence

The purpose of chanting Mangal's mantra is not to «please» the planet, but to awaken its good qualities (courage) in your own life and to gain the strength to bear its difficult results.

🪔 How to chant / recite

  1. Start: Take a sankalpa and begin on the first Tuesday of the bright fortnight (shukla paksha), or on any Tuesday.
  2. Time: Morning after bath; Tuesday is special.
  3. Seat & direction: On a woollen/kusha asana, facing south (or east/north).
  4. Mala & count: One mala (108) of the beej or laghu mantra daily; by tradition the total count for the beej mantra is 10,000 — do such a big anushthan only after checking the kundali and under an acharya's guidance.
  5. Conclusion: At the end of the anushthan, the tradition is a havan of one-tenth the japa count, charity (masoor dal (red lentils), red cloth, jaggery) and feeding a brahmin/someone in need.

🛕 Puja vidhi (step by step)

🧺 Items needed

  • Picture/idol of Hanuman ji
  • Sindoor and jasmine oil (for chola)
  • Red flowers (hibiscus/rose)
  • Red cloth or red asana
  • Ghee/sesame-oil lamp, incense
  • Bhog of jaggery-gram, boondi or besan laddoo
  • Tulsi leaves (on the bhog)
  • Water vessel, akshata

🪷 Procedure

  1. Bathe and wear clean clothes; clean the puja place and spread a fresh cloth on the altar (chowki).
  2. Do achamana (sip water three times) and purify hands and mouth; sit on an asana and calm the mind.
  3. Light a lamp of ghee or sesame oil — by tradition the lamp is kept to the deity's right.
  4. Take water, akshata (unbroken rice) and a flower in the right hand and make the sankalpa — your name, gotra, place, date and the purpose of the puja, spoken or in the mind; then let the water fall to the ground.
  5. First remember Shri Ganesha (Om Gam Ganapataye Namah).
  6. Remember Shri Ram and Sita along with Hanuman — Hanuman puja is considered complete only with Ram-bhakti.
  7. Bathe the idol with water (sprinkle water on a picture), then offer sindoor with jasmine oil (the custom of 'chola' on Tuesday/Saturday).
  8. Offer red flowers, akshata, incense and lamp; offer jaggery-gram or laddoo with a tulsi leaf.
  9. Recite Hanuman Chalisa / Bajrang Baan / Sundarkand, then sing «Aarti Kijai Hanuman Lala Ki».
  10. Finally perform aarti, offer pushpanjali (flowers) and do parikrama (or turn around in your place).
  11. Ask forgiveness for any mistakes in the puja, distribute the prasad and take it yourself.

⚠️ Rules & precautions

  • On recitation days keep celibacy, sattvic food and avoid anger.
  • Avoid meat and alcohol — purity is valued highest in Hanuman worship.
  • By tradition women do not touch the idol or offer the chola, but everyone can recite, sing bhajans and do aarti.
  • During sutak/ashaucha, remember mentally instead of a formal puja.

🎁 Items to donate (on Tuesday)

  • Masoor dal (red lentils)
  • Red cloth
  • Jaggery
  • Copper
  • Red sandalwood

These are traditional beliefs described in scriptures; results are understood to depend on faith, discipline and one's own actions.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How many times should the Mangal mantra be chanted?

One mala (108) daily; tradition prescribes an anushthan of 10,000 japa in total, completed over many days.

Which should I chant — beej, Vedic or Pauranik?

For regular japa the laghu or beej mantra is easiest; the Vedic mantra needs correct pronunciation — learn it from an acharya; the Pauranik verse is for meditation and praise.

Is it necessary to wear Red Coral?

No; wear a gemstone only on the advice of a qualified astrologer after examining the kundali — a wrong gemstone can even harm. Mantra japa and charity are safe remedies for everyone.

How do I know if Mangal is weak?

Look at Mangal's sign, house, strength and dasha in your kundali — make a free kundali on Nakshtra Tak or ask an astrologer.
