Rahu is considered the significator of ambition, foreign lands, technology, illusion, sudden gains and losses, addiction and hidden enemies. When Rahu is weak or afflicted in the kundali, or its difficult dasha is running, tradition recommends its mantra japa, charity and the worship of its presiding deity. Below are all four kinds of Rahu mantras with meaning, the japa method and remedies.

Beej (seed) mantra
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः॥
Om Bhram Bhrim Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah ||
The tantric beej mantra of Rahu — salutations to Rahu with three seed syllables. By tradition this is the form most chanted for graha-shanti.
Laghu (simple) mantra
ॐ रां राहवे नमः॥
Om Ram Rahave Namah ||
The short, simple mantra of Rahu — for daily japa; anyone can chant it.
Vedic mantra
ॐ कया नश्चित्र आ भुवदूती सदावृधः सखा। कया शचिष्ठया वृता॥
Om Kaya Nashchitra A Bhuvaduti Sadavridhah Sakha | Kaya Shachishthaya Vrita ||
The Vedic verse of Rahu (Rigveda 4.31.1; Shukla Yajurveda 27.39) — this is the verse given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra for Rahu-shanti; chant it with correct pronunciation, ideally after learning it from an acharya.
Pauranik mantra (Navagraha Stotra)
अर्धकायं महावीर्यं चन्द्रादित्यविमर्दनम्। सिंहिकागर्भसम्भूतं तं राहुं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥
Ardhakayam Mahaviryam Chandradityavimardanam | Sinhikagarbhasambhutam Tam Rahum Pranamamyaham ||
The Rahu verse of the Navagraha Stotra by Maharshi Vyasa: I bow to Rahu — half-bodied, very powerful, eclipser of the Moon and Sun, born of Simhika's womb.

Beej and laghu mantras — the graha-shanti tradition; Vedic verse — as given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (ch. 84), text checked against Rigveda 4.31.1; Shukla Yajurveda 27.39; Pauranik — the Navagraha Stotra composed by Vyasa.

💡 Essence

The purpose of chanting Rahu's mantra is not to «please» the planet, but to awaken its good qualities (ambition) in your own life and to gain the strength to bear its difficult results.

🪔 How to chant / recite

  1. Start: Take a sankalpa and begin on the first Saturday of the bright fortnight (shukla paksha), or on any Saturday.
  2. Time: Morning after bath; Saturday is special.
  3. Seat & direction: On a woollen/kusha asana, facing south-west (nairitya) (or east/north).
  4. Mala & count: One mala (108) of the beej or laghu mantra daily; by tradition the total count for the beej mantra is 18,000 — do such a big anushthan only after checking the kundali and under an acharya's guidance.
  5. Conclusion: At the end of the anushthan, the tradition is a havan of one-tenth the japa count, charity (black sesame, mustard, blue cloth) and feeding a brahmin/someone in need.

🛕 Puja vidhi (step by step)

🧺 Items needed

  • Picture/idol of Maa Durga
  • Red chunari and red cloth
  • Red flowers (especially hibiscus)
  • Roli, kumkum, akshata, sindoor
  • Solah shringar items (as possible)
  • Ghee lamp (akhand jyoti in Navratri)
  • Coconut, fruits, halwa-puri or sweets as bhog
  • Cloves, cardamom, betel leaf

🪷 Procedure

  1. Bathe and wear clean clothes; clean the puja place and spread a fresh cloth on the altar (chowki).
  2. Do achamana (sip water three times) and purify hands and mouth; sit on an asana and calm the mind.
  3. Light a lamp of ghee or sesame oil — by tradition the lamp is kept to the deity's right.
  4. Take water, akshata (unbroken rice) and a flower in the right hand and make the sankalpa — your name, gotra, place, date and the purpose of the puja, spoken or in the mind; then let the water fall to the ground.
  5. First remember Shri Ganesha (Om Gam Ganapataye Namah).
  6. Invoke the Mother; in Navratri establish the kalash on the altar, otherwise just the picture.
  7. Offer water, drape the red chunari; offer roli-kumkum, sindoor, akshata and red flowers.
  8. Show incense and lamp, offer coconut and bhog; recite Durga Chalisa / Durga Saptashati or chant the Navarna mantra (Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche).
  9. Sing «Jai Ambe Gauri»; on Ashtami/Navami kanya-pujan is customary.
  10. Finally perform aarti, offer pushpanjali (flowers) and do parikrama (or turn around in your place).
  11. Ask forgiveness for any mistakes in the puja, distribute the prasad and take it yourself.

⚠️ Rules & precautions

  • In Navratri keep sattvic food, celibacy and fast as per capacity; onion-garlic avoided.
  • Durva grass is not offered to the Mother — it is dear to Ganesha.
  • If an akhand jyoti is lit, do not let it go out and do not leave the house empty.
  • The worship of one who disrespects women is not accepted — the core spirit of the Shakta tradition.

These are traditional beliefs described in scriptures; results are understood to depend on faith, discipline and one's own actions.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How many times should the Rahu mantra be chanted?

One mala (108) daily; tradition prescribes an anushthan of 18,000 japa in total, completed over many days.

Which should I chant — beej, Vedic or Pauranik?

For regular japa the laghu or beej mantra is easiest; the Vedic mantra needs correct pronunciation — learn it from an acharya; the Pauranik verse is for meditation and praise.

Is it necessary to wear Hessonite?

No; wear a gemstone only on the advice of a qualified astrologer after examining the kundali — a wrong gemstone can even harm. Mantra japa and charity are safe remedies for everyone.

How do I know if Rahu is weak?

Look at Rahu's sign, house, strength and dasha in your kundali — make a free kundali on Nakshtra Tak or ask an astrologer.
