Picture/idol of Hanuman ji
Sindoor and jasmine oil (for chola)
Red flowers (hibiscus/rose)
Red cloth or red asana
Ghee/sesame-oil lamp, incense
Bhog of jaggery-gram, boondi or besan laddoo

ЁЯк╖ Procedure
Bathe and wear clean clothes; clean the puja place and spread a fresh cloth on the altar (chowki).
Do achamana (sip water three times) and purify hands and mouth; sit on an asana and calm the mind.
Light a lamp of ghee or sesame oil тАФ by tradition the lamp is kept to the deity's right.
Take water, akshata (unbroken rice) and a flower in the right hand and make the sankalpa тАФ your name, gotra, place, date and the purpose of the puja, spoken or in the mind; then let the water fall to the ground.
First remember Shri Ganesha (Om Gam Ganapataye Namah).
Remember Shri Ram and Sita along with Hanuman тАФ Hanuman puja is considered complete only with Ram-bhakti.
Bathe the idol with water (sprinkle water on a picture), then offer sindoor with jasmine oil (the custom of 'chola' on Tuesday/Saturday).
Offer red flowers, akshata, incense and lamp; offer jaggery-gram or laddoo with a tulsi leaf.
Recite Hanuman Chalisa / Bajrang Baan / Sundarkand, then sing ┬лAarti Kijai Hanuman Lala Ki┬╗.
Finally perform aarti, offer pushpanjali (flowers) and do parikrama (or turn around in your place).
Ask forgiveness for any mistakes in the puja, distribute the prasad and take it yourself.
тЪая╕П Rules & precautions
On recitation days keep celibacy, sattvic food and avoid anger.
Avoid meat and alcohol тАФ purity is valued highest in Hanuman worship.
By tradition women do not touch the idol or offer the chola, but everyone can recite, sing bhajans and do aarti.
During sutak/ashaucha, remember mentally instead of a formal puja.
ЁЯУЬ Story / origin
By tradition Goswami Tulsidas composed this Chalisa in Awadhi. A folk story says he recited it while imprisoned by an emperor and was freed тАФ the line ┬лchhootahi bandi maha sukh hoi┬╗ is linked to it; this is more a story of faith than history.
The Chalisa narrates Hanuman's life in order тАФ taking the Sun for a fruit, uniting Sugriva and Ram, crossing the ocean, finding Sita, burning Lanka, bringing the Sanjivani and being embraced by Ram.
ЁЯМЯ Benefits (as per tradition)
The most popular prayer for protection from fear, trouble and negative thoughts.
Recited by students and working people for strength, wisdom, learning and confidence.
Traditionally, Hanuman worship is also advised for Saturn's affliction and Mangal dosha.
These are traditional beliefs described in scriptures; results are understood to depend on faith, discipline and one's own actions.
