Surya (Sun) is considered the significator of the soul, father, government/authority, honour, bones, eyesight and leadership. When Surya is weak or afflicted in the kundali, or its difficult dasha is running, tradition recommends its mantra japa, charity and the worship of its presiding deity. Below are all four kinds of Surya mantras with meaning, the japa method and remedies.

Beej and laghu mantras — the graha-shanti tradition; Vedic verse — as given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (ch. 84), text checked against Rigveda 1.35.2; Shukla Yajurveda 33.43; Pauranik — the Navagraha Stotra composed by Vyasa.
The purpose of chanting Surya's mantra is not to «please» the planet, but to awaken its good qualities (the soul) in your own life and to gain the strength to bear its difficult results.

These are traditional beliefs described in scriptures; results are understood to depend on faith, discipline and one's own actions.
One mala (108) daily; tradition prescribes an anushthan of 7,000 japa in total, completed over many days.
For regular japa the laghu or beej mantra is easiest; the Vedic mantra needs correct pronunciation — learn it from an acharya; the Pauranik verse is for meditation and praise.
No; wear a gemstone only on the advice of a qualified astrologer after examining the kundali — a wrong gemstone can even harm. Mantra japa and charity are safe remedies for everyone.
