Navagraha – nine planets, nine powers

Vedic astrology counts the seven visible planets from Sun to Saturn along with Rahu and Ketu — the total Navagraha. Rahu-Ketu have no physical body; These are the two intersection points of the Moon's orbit and the Sun's path (ecliptic), that is why they were called shadow planets and they always move retrograde (in the opposite direction). Sun and Moon are called light planets and never go retrograde.

Naturally Jupiter, Venus, Full Moon and auspicious-combined Mercury are considered auspicious; Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu, weak Moon and sinful Mercury. But the final decision is not taken by this alone – the planet is the lord of which houses in which ascendant, this is a bigger reason than that. This is the reason why a «sin» planet like Saturn becomes a Yogakaraka in Taurus ascendant, and even auspicious Mercury in Aries ascendant does not give special results.

Vimshottari dasha tells the results of which planet at which period of life. Its entire period is 120 years and the order is – Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years. The dasha starts from the lord of the nakshatra in which the Moon was at the time of birth – that is why without the exact time of birth, the dasha calculation is not reliable.
