The Shri Suktam is the oldest Vedic hymn to Lakshmi, found in the appendix (khila) of the Rigveda. In it Agni (Jataveda) is asked to bring the golden Lakshmi who never departs, and to drive away poverty (Alakshmi), hunger, thirst and want. It is recited in Lakshmi puja, on Deepavali and in Shri Yantra worship, and its verses are used for havan.

O Jataveda (Agni), bring to me Lakshmi тАФ golden in colour, (graceful as a doe / remover of sin), wearing garlands of gold and silver, delightful as the moon, made of gold.
I invoke the goddess Shri, who has horses in front and chariots in the middle and is awakened by the trumpeting of elephants тАФ may the goddess Shri be pleased with me.
I invoke here Shri тАФ gently smiling, with a wall of gold, moist (with compassion), radiant, herself content and satisfying others, seated on a lotus and lotus-coloured.
I take refuge in that Shri тАФ moon-like, luminous, blazing with fame, served by the gods, generous, holding the lotus; may my poverty (Alakshmi) perish тАФ I choose you.
O you of the Sun's lustre, from your austerity the bilva tree, king of plants, was born; may its fruits, by the power of austerity, drive away the obstacles of illusion within me and Alakshmi outside.
May we obtain the desire and intent of the mind, truth of speech, the beauty of cattle and (the taste of) food; may prosperity and fame take shelter in me.
O Jataveda, bring to me Lakshmi тАФ moist (compassionate), like a lotus pond, nourishing, golden-yellow, wearing a lotus garland, moon-like, made of gold.
O Jataveda, bring to me Lakshmi тАФ moist, the upholder (of good deeds), bearing a staff, of beautiful colour, wearing a golden garland, sun-like, made of gold.
Phalashruti: one who desires prosperity should become pure and self-controlled, offer ghee into the fire daily and constantly chant these fifteen riks of Shri.
