Kartik Krishna Ashtami — the mother's waterless fast for her children's long life and happiness; broken in the evening with arghya to the stars.
Ahoi Ashtami is the mothers' vrat kept on the Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month — three to four days after Karwa Chauth and eight days before Diwali. On this day mothers fast without water from sunrise until the stars appear, for their children's long life, health and happiness, and break the fast in the evening after the puja and katha of Ahoi Mata by offering arghya to the stars.
Drawing Ahoi Mata on the wall with geru (an eight-cornered figure — the eight chambers of Ashtami — along with the syahu/porcupine and her babies), the silver Ahoi (syahu) with a string of pearls, and the karwa from Karwa Chauth — these are the marks of this vrat. Significance — why this vrat
Ahoi means 'she who averts the un-happenable' — the vrat is believed to ward off danger to one's children and to grant children to the childless. Women without children also keep it wishing for a child — a midnight bath in Radha Kund at Mathura on this night is held to be specially blessed.
Karwa Chauth is for the husband, Ahoi for the children — both fall in the Kartik Krishna Paksha three or four days apart, so in North India they are kept as a pair and the karwa of Karwa Chauth is preserved until Ahoi.
The fast lasts from sunrise until the stars are seen — not until moonrise as on Karwa Chauth. The moon rises late (around midnight) on this night; some families offer arghya to the moon too, but the general rule is the stars. Stars become clearly visible about 35-45 minutes after the sunset time shown above.
Puja vidhi (step by step)
This is the North-Indian household vidhi — the Ahoi on the wall, the karwas, the katha, arghya to the stars.
- Bathe in the morning and take the sankalp — 'I keep the Ahoi Ashtami vrat for my children's long life, health and happiness.' No food or water during the day (if unwell, with fruit and water).
- During the day draw Ahoi Mata on the wall of the puja place with geru or turmeric — eight chambers/corners, the Mother in the centre, with the syahu (porcupine) and her seven babies; or put up a market Ahoi picture/calendar.
- Below the picture, on a wooden seat, place a kalash filled with water and tie mauli on it; keep the Karwa Chauth karwa (filled with water, a straw on top) beside it — this water is sprinkled in the house on Diwali.
- String the silver Ahoi (syahu) and two pearls (two more pearls are added every year) on red kalava, or take out last year's string; offer it in the puja and later wear it/keep it as an heirloom.
- In the evening, before sunset (in Pradosh Kaal), prepare the thali — lamp, roli, akshat, flowers, halwa-poori, 8 pooris + 8 mathris/puas, milk-rice, fruit, water chestnuts, radish — and the women of the family listen together to the Ahoi Mata katha (below). Hold 7 grains of wheat in the hand during the katha.
- After the katha, the aarti of Ahoi Mata; give the wheat grains from your hand and the baya (halwa-poori, dakshina, clothes) to your mother-in-law/elder sister-in-law and touch her feet.
- When the stars appear (about 35-45 minutes after sunset) offer arghya to the stars from the terrace/courtyard with water from the kalash or lota; some families also offer arghya to the moon at moonrise (late night) — follow your custom.
- After the arghya drink water and break the fast; feed the children first, then eat yourself. The Ahoi picture stays on the wall until Diwali and is worshipped again on Diwali day.
Puja samagri checklist
If the Karwa Chauth karwa and last year's silver string have been kept safely, the work is easy.

A merchant's wife had seven sons. In Kartik she went to the forest to fetch clay to plaster the house. While digging, her trowel killed a baby of a porcupine (syahu). She felt sorry, but returned with the clay.
After that, one by one, all seven of her sons died within a year. Grief-stricken, she asked the pandits and her neighbours; an old woman told her — 'You unknowingly killed the syahu's baby; on Kartik Krishna Ashtami draw Ahoi Mata and the syahu, worship them, ask forgiveness and keep the vrat for your children.'
On that Ashtami the merchant's wife drew the syahu and her babies on the wall, kept a waterless fast, told the katha and offered arghya to the stars. Ahoi Mata was pleased — the syahu mother forgave her too — and her seven sons came back to life. Since then mothers keep the Ahoi Ashtami vrat for the protection of their children.
At the end of the katha all the women say — 'As the merchant's wife got her sons back, may everyone get theirs; may Ahoi Mata protect everyone's children.' The wheat grains held in the hand are given to the mother-in-law.
Fasting food and the Ahoi bhog
The Ahoi fast is waterless but shorter than Karwa Chauth — it ends as soon as the stars appear after sunset. The bhog traditionally keeps the count of Ashtami (eight).
- Bhog: 8 pooris + 8 mathris or 8 puas (of wheat flour and jaggery), semolina halwa, milk-rice (rice cooked in milk), fruit
- Breaking the fast: first the arghya water, then halwa-poori; many families make a point of eating radish and water chestnut on this day
- Baya: a thali of halwa-poori, fruit, dakshina, saree/bangles — for the mother-in-law or the eldest woman of the house after the katha
- Puas/mathris and kheel-batasha for the children after the katha — 'Ahoi prasad'
- Pregnant or nursing mothers should keep the vrat with fruit and water — no insisting on a waterless fast

- Sleeping in the day, scissors and needle, scolding or hitting any child
