Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the Dwitiya of the Shukla Paksha of Kartik month — two days after Diwali. It is the last day of the five-day festival of lamps. On this day the sister applies tilak on her brother's forehead, performs his aarti, prays for his long life, and the brother gives a gift and renews his promise to protect her.

It is also called Yama Dwitiya — the story goes that on this day Yamraj went to eat at the home of his sister Yamuna and granted the boon that any brother who visits his sister on this day, receives her tilak and eats her food will have no fear of untimely death. Below are this year's date, the auspicious tilak time, vidhi, the items of the thali, katha, food and the customs of different states.

Significance — why this vrat

On Raksha Bandhan the sister asks the brother for protection; on Bhai Dooj the sister prays for the brother's protection (life) — it is the festival of the sister's blessing. Hence the tilak from the sister's hand and the meal at the sister's home or cooked by her.

The auspicious time for the tilak is the afternoon (aparahna) — best if the Dwitiya tithi is present in the afternoon; Abhijit Muhurat (above) is also good. If the Dwitiya touches the afternoon on two days, the second day is taken.

Women without a brother apply tilak to the moon (or to a maternal uncle/cousin); men without a sister receive tilak from an aunt or a sister-like woman — the bond is of feeling, not of blood.

Puja vidhi (step by step)

This is the household vidhi — preparation in the morning, tilak and aarti in the afternoon, then the meal and gifts.

  1. In the morning the sister bathes and prepares the puja thali — roli, akshat, kumkum, lamp, flowers, sweets, coconut/betel nut, mauli, paan, kalava; in many places sindoor, durva grass and a dry coconut as well.
  2. Where the brother will sit, place a wooden seat and draw a chowk (eight-petalled) with flour/rice flour; the brother sits facing east or north with a handkerchief/cap on his head.
  3. In the afternoon muhurat (time above) the sister applies the roli-akshat tilak on the brother's forehead, ties the kalava, performs the aarti, places a coconut/betel nut in his hand and feeds him a sweet; praying in her heart — 'Yamraj! Protect my brother, may his life be long.'
  4. The brother touches the sister's feet (if she is younger, the sister touches his), gives a gift/shagun and renews the promise — 'Your protection is my dharma.' Brother and sister feed each other sweets.
  5. The sister serves the brother a meal cooked by her own hands — in the katha Yamuna fed Yama; it is even more auspicious if the brother goes to the sister's home. The brother's favourite food, especially rice-kadhi/kheer.
  6. In Purvanchal-Bihar sisters do 'Godhan Kootna' in the morning — they make a figure of Yama/a thorn of the rengni plant in cow dung and pound it with a pestle, cursing Yamraj for the sake of the brother's life — then prick their tongue with the thorn in repentance; this is a folk custom.
  7. In the evening light a lamp for Yamraj and Chitragupta (facing south, outside the house); those living by the Yamuna bathe in the river and float lamps.
  8. The close of the Deepotsav — light the remaining Diwali lamps; if the sister departs, with shagun.

Puja samagri checklist

The tilak thali should have all of these — with several brothers, a separate coconut/betel nut for each.

  • Puja thali, roli, kumkum, akshat (rice), turmeric, sandalwood
  • Kalava/mauli, lamp (ghee), camphor, incense
  • Coconut (dry) or betel nut — one for each brother
  • Sweets (laddoo/barfi/peda), mishri, paan, cardamom
  • Flowers, garland, durva grass
  • Flour/rice flour to draw the chowk, wooden seat, aasan
  • Handkerchief/cap for the brother (to cover the head)
  • Gift/shagun envelope (from the brother), sweets and a handkerchief from the sister

Vrat katha (the story)

Yamraj, son of Surya, and his sister Yamuna were twins. Yamuna kept inviting her brother to eat at her home, but Yama, the god of death, never found the time. One day, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Yamraj arrived at his sister's home unannounced. Yamuna was overjoyed — she bathed her brother, did his tilak and aarti and fed him with her own hands.

The pleased Yamraj asked her to seek a boon. Yamuna asked — 'Come to my home every year on this day, and let any brother who visits his sister on this day and receives tilak and food from her hand have no fear of you (untimely death); let any sister who applies tilak to her brother on this day prosper in her married life.' Yamraj said 'So be it' — since then it is Yama Dwitiya / Bhai Dooj.

The other story is of Shri Krishna — after killing Narakasura, Krishna reached the home of his sister Subhadra on this Dwitiya; Subhadra welcomed him with lamp, tilak and food. This is why Maharashtra and Gujarat call it Bhaubeej/Bhai Beej.

The Bhai Dooj meal — cooked by the sister

The meal on this day should be cooked by the sister — that is the essence of the katha. Cook the brother's favourite food; by tradition something of rice (kheer/kadhi-rice) and a sweet without fail.

  • Uttar Pradesh-Bihar: kadhi-rice, poori-sabzi, kheer, dahi-bada; in Purvanchal bajri/makhana sweets at the 'Bhai Tika'
  • Punjab-Haryana: sweets and mathri, halwa, dry fruits; a special 'tikka' thali and a dry coconut for the brother
  • Maharashtra (Bhaubeej): basundi-poori, shrikhand, karanji; the sister feeds the brother after the 'aukshan'
  • Bengal (Bhai Phonta): sweets, luchi, payesh and the brother's favourite fish or meat too (as per family custom)
  • Gujarat-Rajasthan: lapsi, kheer, mohanthal, farsan; the brother gifts the sister a saree/bangles

Do's and don'ts

✅ Do

  • Tilak in the afternoon (or in Abhijit) — time above; if the Dwitiya spans two days, the second day
  • The brother sits facing east/north with head covered; aarti and a sweet after the tilak
  • The meal from the sister's hand — if possible the brother visits the sister's home
  • No brother — tilak to the moon/maternal uncle/cousin; no sister — from an aunt or a sister-like woman
  • The Yama-Chitragupta lamp facing south in the evening

❌ Don't

  • Do not do the tilak in Rahu Kaal (see the time above)
  • No quarrels or harsh words between brother and sister on this day — love is the root of the festival
  • The brother should not leave empty-handed — but the shagun is symbolic, not large; no gifts on borrowed money
  • Do not send the brother away after the tilak without a meal
  • No darkness in the house on the last day of the Deepotsav — light the lamps

Frequently asked questions

When is Bhai Dooj in 2026?

The date at the top is this year's Kartik Shukla Dwitiya — from panchang calculations; the afternoon/Abhijit tilak time (Delhi) is shown there too. If the Dwitiya touches the afternoon on two days, the second day is Bhai Dooj.

What is the auspicious time for the Bhai Dooj tilak?

The aparahna (afternoon, roughly 1:30-3:30 pm) is best — Yamuna fed Yama in this period; Abhijit Muhurat (above) is also good. Avoid Rahu Kaal.

What is the difference between Bhai Dooj and Raksha Bandhan?

On Raksha Bandhan (Shravan Purnima) the sister ties a rakhi and takes the brother's promise of protection; on Bhai Dooj the sister applies tilak and prays to Yamraj for the brother's life — here the sister gives the blessing.

What should a woman without a brother do?

Apply tilak/offer arghya to the moon (the custom in Maharashtra), or apply tilak to a maternal uncle, a cousin or a brother-like man. A man without a sister receives tilak from an aunt's daughter or a sister-like woman.

What is the 'Bhai Phonta' mantra of Bengal?

'Bhaiyer kopale dilam phonta, Jomer duare porlo kanta' — I put the tilak on my brother's forehead, a thorn fell at Yama's door; said three times, then the sister blesses with paddy and durva.
