Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami — the birth of Shri Krishna at midnight (Nishita), Rohini nakshatra; a day-long fast, the birth aarti at 12, the cradle, coriander panjiri, butter-mishri; Dahi Handi/Nandotsav the next day.
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month — eight days after Raksha Bandhan. In the prison of Mathura, to Devaki and Vasudeva, in Rohini nakshatra, at midnight, Shri Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born — hence the fast all day and the birth aarti at exactly 12 at night (Nishita Kaal, time above).
Women of the house fast all day (fruit/waterless), set up the tableau and cradle in the evening, at 12 at night bathe Bal Gopal (Laddu Gopal) in panchamrit, dress him in new clothes, rock him in the cradle and do the birth aarti, and offer coriander panjiri and butter-mishri; Nandotsav/Dahi Handi the next day. The Smarta (Ashtami) and Vaishnava (Rohini-linked, next day) dates sometimes differ — explained below. Significance — why this vrat
The birth muhurat: Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami + Rohini nakshatra + midnight + the Moon in Taurus — this 'Jayanti yoga' in full is rare; the Smarta tradition (householders) takes the day on whose night the Ashtami is present at Nishita, the Vaishnava sects (temples/ISKCON/Braj) the Rohini-linked udaya tithi — hence two days in many years: householders the first day, temples the second; the date above is by the Smarta rule (Nishita-vyapini Ashtami).
The fast from sunrise on Ashtami until the birth at midnight (or until sunrise on Navami — the strict form); paran after the birth at night or on Navami morning — after the Rohini/Ashtami ends. It is also regarded as a vrat for the blessing and welfare of children — the service of Bal Gopal in a mother's spirit.
The Mangala Aarti of Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish and Banke Bihari in Mathura-Vrindavan (only on this night of the year), Dahi Handi (Govinda) in Maharashtra-Gujarat, Gokulashtami in the south (Krishna's little footprints), 'Janmashtami/Nanda Utsav' in Odisha-Bengal — the whole country stays awake one night.
Puja vidhi (step by step)
This is the household vidhi — the day's fast and preparing the tableau, the birth aarti at 12 at night, Nandotsav and paran the next day.
- Bathe in the morning, sankalp — 'I keep the Shri Krishna Janmashtami vrat for the family's welfare/the blessing of children, and will do paran after the birth'; fruit or waterless during the day (as strength allows); cleaning the house, decorating the temple.
- The tableau: the leelas of the child Krishna — Gokul, the Yamuna, Kamsa's prison, cows and cowherds in clay/toys; the cradle (swing) with flowers and lights; new clothes, crown, flute and peacock feather for Laddu Gopal; kalash; red/yellow cloth at the puja place.
- Evening (Pradosh): worship of Bal Gopal/the Krishna picture — roli, sandalwood, akshat, Tulsi leaves, garland, incense and lamp; the Bhagavata (tenth canto — the birth episode) or the 'Krishna's birth' katha (below), bhajan-kirtan ('Nand ke anand bhayo'); dressing children as Krishna and Radha.
- The birth at 12 at night (Nishita — time above): conch, bell, thali; bathe Laddu Gopal in panchamrit (milk-curd-ghee-honey-sugar), then Gangajal; wipe, new clothes, crown, tilak, a kajal dot; lay him in the cradle and rock — 'Jai Kanhaiya Lal ki'; the birth aarti 'Aarti Kunjbihari ki'; bhog — coriander panjiri, butter-mishri, panchamrit, cucumber (cutting the cucumber — the 'naal-chhedan', symbol of separating Krishna from the womb, in many homes), fruit, dry fruits.
- Paran: after the birth aarti with panchamrit and panjiri (the householder's custom) or on Navami morning when the Ashtami/Rohini ends; strict vratis after sunrise on Navami; prasad first, then a light meal.
- The next day — Nandotsav/Dahi Handi: in the morning 'Nand ke ghar anand' — a tableau of congratulating Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul, sprinkling turmeric, curd and butter ('Dadhikando' in Mathura), distributing sweets; Dahi Handi (Maharashtra-Gujarat — Govinda troupes); chhappan bhog for Bal Gopal (if possible).
- On the fast day: no sleeping in the day, nothing tamasic, cow service (fodder-jaggery), butter-mishri for children; rest the next day after the night vigil.
- Those wishing for a child: bring Laddu Gopal home this night with a vow of daily service in a mother's spirit (swing, bhog, bath) — the Santan Gopal mantra.

A voice from the sky told the tyrant King Kamsa of Mathura — 'the eighth son of your sister Devaki will kill you'. Kamsa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and killed six sons at birth; the seventh (Balarama) was transferred by Yogamaya to the womb of Rohini. Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, Rohini nakshatra, midnight — in pouring rain and darkness the four-armed Vishnu appeared from Devaki's womb and then became an infant.
The prison locks opened, the guards slept; Vasudeva carried the infant in a basket across the swollen Yamuna — Sheshnag shaded him with his hood, the Yamuna touched his feet and made way. At Gokul, in the home of Nanda and Yashoda, he exchanged him for Yashoda's newborn daughter (Yogamaya) and returned. Kamsa dashed the girl down — she rose into the sky and said 'your death is growing in Gokul'. In the morning the Nanda Utsav in Gokul — a shower of curd and butter.
That very child — the butter thief, the bearer of Govardhan, the subduer of Kaliya, the dancer of the raas, the slayer of Kamsa, the teacher of the Gita — the complete avatar. Janmashtami is the night of that birth which gave hope in darkness — 'Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati…'; hence this night is one of vigil, the birth aarti and joy.
Coriander panjiri, butter-mishri, chhappan bhog — Kanha's kitchen
The main prasad of Janmashtami is coriander panjiri (the nourishing powder given to a new mother — for Mother Devaki/Yashoda), butter-mishri (the butter thief's favourite), panchamrit, cucumber; chhappan bhog in Braj. Fruit in the fast (sabudana-kuttu-fruit), paran with panchamrit-panjiri.
- Coriander panjiri: lightly roast 1 cup dry coriander powder in 2 tbsp ghee; makhana, almonds, cashews, raisins, grated coconut, powdered sugar/boora, cardamom — cooled; the first bhog at the birth
- Butter-mishri (white butter + mishri + Tulsi), panchamrit (milk-curd-ghee-honey-sugar + Tulsi-saffron), cucumber (with stalk — the naal-chhedan)
- Chhappan bhog (Braj/temples): kheer, rabdi, malpua, laddoo, peda, mathri, kachori, poori-sabzi, chutney, pickle, fruit and dry fruits… — 5-11 dishes at home are enough
- Fasting meal: sabudana khichdi/vada, kuttu-singhara poori, potato, curd, fruit, makhana kheer, milk and dry fruits; rock salt
- Nandotsav/Dahi Handi: dahi-chura, butter-puffed rice, sweets; gopalkala in Maharashtra (a mix of curd, chivda, cucumber and pomegranate); seedai-murukku-vella aval-appam in the south (Gokulashtami)

When is Janmashtami in 2027 — one day or two?
The date at the top is by the Smarta rule (the night on which Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami is present at Nishita) — for householders; the Nishita muhurat (Delhi) is shown too. In a year when the Ashtami and Rohini fall on different days, Vaishnava temples (ISKCON/some in Braj) celebrate the next day — at home the date above, the temple festival by their announcement; both are correct.
Why the birth aarti at exactly 12?
Krishna was born at midnight (Nishita Kaal — the midpoint of the night, exact time above); in folk custom at 12 on the clock; Nishita falls between 12:00 and 12:30 depending on the city's sunset and sunrise — see above.
When is the paran?
In the householder's custom after the birth aarti at 12 with panchamrit and panjiri; in the scriptural (strict) custom after sunrise on Navami when the Ashtami/Rohini ends — tithi window above. The unwell/pregnant keep a fruit fast.
Why is a cucumber cut?
At the birth a cucumber with its stalk is cut in the middle (with a coin) as a symbol of separating Bal Gopal from the mother's womb (the cord) — 'naal-chhedan'; the cucumber is the womb, the stalk the cord; a North-Indian folk custom; the cucumber is then prasad.
