Ram Navami is celebrated on the Navami of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month — the last day of Chaitra Navratri. On this day, in Ayodhya, in the house of King Dasharatha, to Mata Kausalya, in Punarvasu nakshatra, at noon (Abhijit Muhurat), Shri Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born — hence the birth aarti at exactly 12 o'clock.

Women of the house keep the fast on this day (it is also the Navami of Navratri — Kanya Pujan, havan), rock the Ram Darbar in a cradle, offer coriander panjiri and panchamrit, and read or listen to the birth episode of the Bal Kand of the Ramcharitmanas. Below are this year's date, the Abhijit (birth) muhurat, vidhi, samagri, katha, bhog and regional customs.

Significance — why this vrat

Rama is Maryada Purushottam — son, brother, husband, king: the ideal of every relationship; the Ram Navami vrat is kept for family happiness, good values in children and patience in hardship. In the Manas — 'Ram janam ke hetu aneka, param bichitra ek ten eka'.

The hour of birth: midday — Abhijit Muhurat (about 11:40-12:30 pm, exact above); the birth aarti, conch and bell, 'Jai Shri Ram' in it — the infant Rama in a cradle in temples. If the Navami touches midday on two days, the first day.

It is also the Navami of Chaitra Navratri (Maa Siddhidatri) — Kanya Pujan, havan and paran on the same day; in the south the tradition of Sita-Rama Kalyanam (wedding) on 'Shri Rama Navami'.

Puja vidhi (step by step)

This is the household vidhi — the vrat sankalp and Navami puja in the morning, the birth celebration at noon, aarti and prasad in the evening.

  1. Bathe in the morning, wear yellow/saffron; sankalp — 'I keep the Ram Navami vrat for the family's welfare.' Fruit during the day (those keeping the Navratri fast by the same rule).
  2. A red/yellow cloth on a wooden seat at the puja place; the idol/picture of the Ram Darbar (Rama-Sita-Lakshmana-Hanuman); a small cradle — for the infant Rama (or a Rama picture); kalash and Ganesha puja.
  3. The morning puja: roli, sandalwood, akshat, yellow flowers, Tulsi, incense and lamp; Ramraksha Stotra/Rama Chalisa; Navratri vratis — the puja of Maa Siddhidatri, Kanya Pujan (for those whose custom is Navami) and havan.
  4. Midday Abhijit (time above) — the birth celebration: read/listen to the birth episode of the Bal Kand ('Bhaye pragat kripala…'); at exactly 12 o'clock conch and bell, rock the infant Rama in the cradle, 'Jai Shri Ram' — the birth aarti 'Shri Ramchandra kripalu bhajman'; bhog of panjiri, panchamrit and saffron rice; sohar/birth songs.
  5. Prasad: coriander panjiri and panchamrit to all; poori-halwa; special for children (the birth of Ram Lalla).
  6. During the day a collective reading of the Sundarkand/Manas, japa of Rama's name (108/1008), Ramayana katha; join the temple procession/tableau in the evening.
  7. The evening aarti, lamps; Navratri vratis do paran that evening or on Dashami; immersion of the kalash and jawara on Dashami.
  8. Charity: yellow cloth, grain, children's books; fodder to a gaushala — in Rama's name.

Vrat katha (the story)

King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had three queens — Kausalya, Kaikeyi, Sumitra — but no children. On Guru Vasishtha's advice he had sage Rishyashringa perform the putra-kameshti yajna; Agni Dev gave a vessel of kheer — Dasharatha divided it among the three queens. In time, on Chaitra Shukla Navami, in Punarvasu nakshatra, Karka lagna, at midday, Rama was born to Kausalya, Bharata to Kaikeyi, Lakshmana and Shatrughna to Sumitra.

In Tulsidas's Manas — 'Naumi tithi madhu maas punita, sukal pachchh abhijit haripreeta; madhyadivas ati seet na ghama, pavan kaal lok bishrama' — this is the midday Abhijit birth muhurat. Vishnu's avatar for the slaying of Ravana and the establishment of dharma; the seventh of the ten avatars.

The story of the 'name of Rama' — Shiva says 'Rama Rama Rama iti rame Rame manorame, sahasranama tattulyam Rama-nama varanane' — one name of Rama equals the Vishnu Sahasranama; hence the tradition of Rama-nama japa and Manas reading on Ram Navami. In the south the story of Bhadrachalam — the devotee Ramadasu and the Sita-Rama Kalyanam.

Coriander panjiri, panchamrit, saffron rice — the bhog of Rama's birth

In North India the Ram Navami bhog is coriander panjiri (the nourishing powder given to a new mother after childbirth — for the infant Rama's mother) and panchamrit; in the south panakam, neer-mor and kosambari (cooling bhog for the summer).

  • Coriander panjiri: lightly roast 1 cup dry coriander powder in ghee, pieces of makhana, almond and cashew, powdered sugar/boora, cardamom — cool it; prasad with panchamrit
  • Panchamrit: milk-curd-ghee-honey-sugar + Tulsi; saffron rice, boondi laddoo, malpua
  • Fasting meal: fruit (Navratri rule), sabudana, fruit; poori-halwa-chana for the paran
  • South (Shri Rama Navami): panakam (jaggery water with cardamom and dry ginger), neer-mor (buttermilk with ginger and coriander), kosambari (moong-cucumber salad), vada-parppu — the same in temples
  • Maharashtra: sunthwada (dry ginger-jaggery) and panchamrit; Bengal-Odisha: payesh-luchi

Frequently asked questions

When is Ram Navami in 2027?

The date at the top is this year's Chaitra Shukla Navami — from panchang calculations; the Abhijit muhurat of the birth (about 12 noon, Delhi) is shown too. If the Navami touches midday on two days, the first day.

At what time is the birth aarti?

The midday Abhijit Muhurat — the time given above (about 11:40-12:30); by tradition conch, bell and the cradle at exactly 12. The birth aarti/Surya Tilak in the temples of Ayodhya at this very moment.

Are Ram Navami and the Navami of Chaitra Navratri the same day?

Yes — the Navami of Chaitra Navratri is Ram Navami (Maa Siddhidatri + Rama's birth); Navratri vratis do Kanya Pujan, havan and paran on this day, with Rama's birth celebration at noon.

Why panjiri?

Coriander panjiri is the nourishing powder given to a new mother — for Mother Kausalya at the infant Rama's birth; hence the prasad of the birth celebration; the same on Krishna Janmashtami.

Is a wedding (Sita-Rama Kalyanam) held on Ram Navami?

In South India (Bhadrachalam, Vontimitta) the Sita-Rama Kalyanam (wedding festival) is celebrated on Ram Navami — in the north on Vivah Panchami (Margashirsha); both traditions are valid.
