💰 Akshaya Tritiya (Akha Teej) 2027
Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya — an abujh muhurat: buying gold, weddings, griha pravesh; Parashurama Jayanti, the start of the Treta Yuga, the descent of the Ganga; charity of water, sattu and fans — whatever is given is imperishable.
Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the Tritiya of the Shukla Paksha of Vaishakha month — about 18 days after Hanuman Jayanti, in the heat of May. 'Akshaya' = that which does not diminish — it is believed that charity, japa, purchases and auspicious works done on this day never decrease; it is one of the three-and-a-half abujh muhurats, so weddings, griha pravesh and new ventures without consulting the panchang; and the biggest day for buying gold and silver.
For women it is a festival of charity and coolness — in the heat, charity of water-filled pots, fans, sattu, melons and umbrellas; 'Akha Teej' in Rajasthan-Malwa — girls' vrats and mass weddings; in Bengal-Odisha the new year's account books and the start of building the chariots. Below are this year's date, the punya-kaal for buying and charity, vidhi, samagri, katha, bhog and regional customs.
Significance — why this vrat
Events of this day in the Puranas: the start of the Treta Yuga, the birth of Parashurama, Vishnu's sixth avatar (Parashurama Jayanti — in Pradosh), the descent of the Ganga to earth (linked to Ganga Saptami), the start of the writing of the Mahabharata (Vyasa-Ganesha), the Akshaya Patra to Draupadi, Sudama meeting Krishna, Kubera's lordship over wealth — hence wealth, charity and food are all imperishable.
Abujh muhurat — weddings, engagements, griha pravesh, purchase of land, vehicles and gold, starting a business are auspicious without a muhurat check; even more so with Rohini nakshatra and a Wednesday/Friday. The whole day is auspicious, Abhijit best; purchases during the day, weddings by the lagna.
The doors of Badrinath Dham open around this day and in Vrindavan the feet of Banke Bihari are shown only on this day of the year; the building of the Jagannath Rath Yatra chariots begins in Puri on this day; 'Halkhata' in Bengal.

This is the household vidhi — bath and charity in the morning, Vishnu-Lakshmi puja, purchases/new work in the day, remembrance of Parashurama in the evening.

- Charity (sunrise to noon, best up to Abhijit): a water-filled earthen pot (surahi), fan, umbrella, slippers, sattu, melon-cucumber, rice-dal-jaggery, cow donation/fodder — things that cool in the heat; to a Brahmin/the needy/a water stall; as much as possible, in the 'akshaya' spirit.
- Purchases (during the day, Abhijit best): gold-silver (a coin/ornament — the symbol of Lakshmi; even one gram), a new vessel, a deal for land or a vehicle, account books; place the purchased item at the puja place first with roli-akshat.

- Evening (Pradosh): Parashurama Jayanti — remembrance of Vishnu's avatar Parashurama, a lamp; a lamp at the Tulsi platform; Ganga Saptami/the Vaishakha bath continues the next day.
- New work: wedding/engagement/griha pravesh/shop — all day; tarpan water for the ancestors (satisfaction of ancestors in Vaishakha) — charity in the ancestors' name on this day is imperishable.
- Breaking the fast: after the puja and charity; Lakshmi bhajans at night.

Open panchang →Vrat katha (the story)
In the Pandavas' exile Draupadi received the Akshaya Patra from the Sun — the food would not run out until Draupadi had eaten; sage Durvasa came with his disciples asking for food when the vessel was empty; Krishna satisfied the whole universe with a single grain of rice stuck in the vessel — it was Akshaya Tritiya. The essence of the story: even a grain given with faith is imperishable.
The story of Sudama — the poor friend Sudama reached Dwarka with a fistful of rice; Krishna ate it with love and gave Sudama imperishable prosperity — on this Tritiya; hence even a little charity (sattu, rice) on this day bears great fruit. And another — the story of the merchant Dharmadas (Bhavishya Purana): the poor Dharmadas gave water, food and fans on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, became the king of Kushavati in his next birth and gained imperishable wealth.
On this day was born Parashurama (Vishnu's sixth avatar), son of Jamadagni and Renuka — hence Parashurama Jayanti; the Ganga descended to earth by Bhagiratha's penance; Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha; the Treta Yuga began — the 'Yugadi tithi'.
Sattu, cucumber, melon — the imperishable kitchen of summer
The scorching heat of Vaishakha — so the bhog and charity of this day are cool: sattu (of barley and chana, savoury or a jaggery sherbet), cucumber, melon, aam panna, chana dal-mishri; 'Satuan' (the festival of eating sattu) in Bihar-Purvanchal falls around this time.
- Sattu: a sherbet of barley/chana sattu with jaggery water, or a cool mix with salt, lemon and mint; sattu laddoo (sattu-jaggery-ghee)
- Cucumber, melon, watermelon, aam panna, bel sherbet — for both charity and bhog
- Chana dal-mishri (Vishnu bhog), kheer, aamras-poori (Maharashtra-Gujarat), saffron rice
- Rajasthan (Akha Teej): kheer-poori, flour laddoos, sattu, gulgule; Bengal: the sweets and sherbet of Halkhata
- Fasting meal: fruit and milk, sattu; if not fasting, a sattvik meal, charity first

Frequently asked questions
When is Akshaya Tritiya in 2027?
The date at the top is this year's Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya — from panchang calculations; the Abhijit muhurat for buying and charity and the span of the Tritiya are shown too. If the Tritiya touches the forenoon on two days, the first day.
When to buy gold — any special time?
The whole day is auspicious (abujh); within the Tritiya tithi, Abhijit Muhurat (about 12 noon) is best, avoid Rahu Kaal — times above. If the tithi begins in the morning, from sunrise; if it begins late, after the tithi starts.
Can a wedding be held on this day without a muhurat?
Yes — one of the three-and-a-half abujh muhurats; still keep the wedding lagna at an auspicious time; no child marriage (punishable by law). See the muhurat page.
What to donate on Akshaya Tritiya?
Things for the summer — a water-filled pot/surahi, fan, umbrella, slippers, sattu, melon-cucumber, grain-jaggery, cloth; setting up a water stall; cow donation/gaushala; in the ancestors' name — whatever is given is imperishable.
Are Parashurama Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya on the same day?
Yes — Parashurama was born in the Pradosh of Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya; so the Jayanti is on that day (the day on which the Tritiya is present in Pradosh — sometimes the next day); remembrance in the evening.
What is Akha Teej?
The folk name of Akshaya Tritiya in Rajasthan-Malwa — mass weddings, the girls' Gauri vrat, sattu and pot, a clay bird; 'Akha' = Akshaya.
