🌊 Ganga Dussehra (& Nirjala Ekadashi) 2027

Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami — the day the Ganga descended to earth; the Ganga bath that destroys ten sins, ten lamps, ten charities; the next day the hardest Ekadashi of the year, Nirjala.

Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the Dashami of the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month — ten days after Vat Savitri, in the fierce heat of June. On this day, by Bhagiratha's penance, the Ganga descended from heaven to earth and flowed through Shiva's locks; 'Dussehra' = the remover of ten (kinds of) sins — on this day the Ganga bath, ten lamps, the charity of ten things.

On the very next day, Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi — Nirjala (Bhimseni) Ekadashi — the essence of the year's 24 Ekadashis, a fast without water; whoever could not keep Ekadashi all year keeps this one. Women give water (pots, water stalls, sherbet), fans, umbrellas and melons in charity on both days. Below are this year's two dates, the bath muhurat, vidhi, samagri, katha, bhog and regional customs.

Significance — why this vrat

The descent of the Ganga — Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami, Hasta nakshatra, Wednesday, Vyatipata yoga, Gara karana, Ananda yoga, the Moon in Virgo, the Sun in Taurus — the Ganga descended in these ten yogas (the Dussehra yoga); the Ganga bath on this day destroys ten sins (three of the body, four of speech, three of the mind) — hence ten lamps, ten fruits, ten Brahmins, ten dips.

Nirjala Ekadashi — Vyasa told Bhima: keep this one Ekadashi without water and gain the fruit of all Ekadashis; not even water from sunrise to the next sunrise (paran) — hence the charity of water (pots, surahis, sherbet) is the greatest merit of the day; the fast is hard in the heat of Jyeshtha — according to strength.

The ten days before Ganga Dussehra (Pratipada to Dashami) are the 'Ganga Dussehra bath'; fairs at Haridwar, Prayag, Varanasi and Garhmukteshwar; a bath with Gangajal at home and the 'Ganga Stotra/Ganga Lahari' are valid; even without the Ganga bank — a river, pond or home.

Puja vidhi (step by step)

This is the household vidhi — a dawn bath, ten lamps and charity, Ganga puja on the Dashami; the waterless fast and water charity on the Ekadashi, paran on the Dwadashi.

1. On the Dashami bathe in Brahma Muhurat (time above) in the Ganga/a river/pond or at home with Gangajal in the water — ten dips (or water over the head ten times), 'Om Namo Gangayai Vishwarupinyai Narayanyai Namo Namah'; arghya to the Sun.
2. Ganga puja: a picture of Ganga ji/Gangajal in a kalash; roli-sandalwood-akshat, ten flowers (lotus/marigold), ten fruits, ten lamps (dough/clay — floated at the ghat or in a water vessel at home), incense; water and bel leaves for Shiva (the Ganga from his locks); Ganga Stotra/'Ganga Lahari'/the Ganga aarti 'Om Jai Gange Mata'.
3. Ten charities (the Dussehra charity): ten kinds of things — a water pot, fan, umbrella, slippers, sattu, melon-cucumber, grain, jaggery, cloth, dakshina — to ten Brahmins/needy people (or in tens); setting up a water stall; cow service.
4. Fast (Dashami): fruit/one meal; ten lamps at the ghat/Tulsi platform in the evening; listen to the Ganga katha (below); tarpan with Gangajal for the ancestors (their satisfaction) — Ganga Dussehra is for the ancestors too.
5. Ekadashi — Nirjala: give up water from the evening of Dashami (last after the puja); on Ekadashi bathe before sunrise, sankalp 'the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat without water'; Vishnu puja (Tulsi, yellow flowers, panchamrit), 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya', Vishnu Sahasranama; no water all day (achaman/rinsing is allowed); rest in a cool place, bhajans.
6. The Ekadashi charity: water-filled pots (clay, with lid and mango leaves), a stall of sherbet/buttermilk, fan, umbrella, melon, sattu, sesame-water — 'water charity' above all; green fodder and water for cows; water bowls for birds.
7. Night vigil (if possible) — Vishnu bhajans; paran on the Dwadashi after sunrise, once the Hari Vasar has passed — first Tulsi water, then food and water to a Brahmin/the needy, then yourself (light — khichdi/daliya).
8. The pregnant, unwell and elderly: not waterless — the Ekadashi with fruit and water; the spirit is what matters. Care in the crowd and heat at the ghat on Ganga Dussehra.

Vrat katha (the story)

The 60,000 sons of King Sagara of Ayodhya were burnt to ash by the curse of sage Kapila; to free them the Ganga had to be brought to earth. Anshuman, Dilipa — generations of penance; at last Bhagiratha pleased Brahma; the earth could not bear the Ganga's force, so Shiva caught the Ganga in his locks and released one stream — on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami the Ganga flowed from Haridwar, the sons of Sagara were freed, and the Ganga was called 'Bhagirathi'. Since then Ganga Dussehra — the Ganga's descent to earth.

Dussehra = the removal of ten sins — in the Skanda Purana the bath and charity in the ten yogas of this day destroy three sins of the body (violence, theft, adultery), four of speech (lies, harshness, slander, idle talk), three of the mind (coveting, ill-will, disbelief); hence the number ten.

Nirjala Ekadashi — Bhima loved food and could not keep every Ekadashi; Vyasa said — keep one fast without water on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi and gain the fruit of all 24; Bhima kept it, fainted, but completed it — hence 'Bhimseni Ekadashi'; in the Padma Purana its fruit exceeds pilgrimage, charity and yajna.

The sattu and mango of Dussehra and the water charity of the Ekadashi

The heat of June — sattu sherbet, mango, melon and kheer on Ganga Dussehra; on Nirjala Ekadashi not even water for oneself, but pots, sherbet and buttermilk for others — that is the bhog. A light paran on Dwadashi.

• Ganga Dussehra: sattu (chana-barley) sherbet/laddoo, aamras, melon-cucumber, kheer (the Dussehra bhog), poori-aloo; a bel-sherbet stall at the ghat
• Ten fruits for the Ganga — mango, banana, melon, litchi, jamun, cucumber, bel, apple, pomegranate, coconut — then share
• Nirjala Ekadashi: nothing for the vrati (achaman only); charity — cool water in clay pots + mango leaves, lemon sherbet, buttermilk, a bel-sherbet stall, melon, sattu, fan; water and grain for birds
• Paran (Dwadashi): Tulsi water, coconut water, khichdi/moong daliya, curd, fruit — slowly; nothing heavy or fried
• Pregnant/unwell: fruit, milk and coconut water on the Ekadashi; not waterless
