🛕 Jagannath Rath Yatra 2027
Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya — Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra on three chariots in Puri towards the Gundicha temple (the aunt's house); pulling the chariot ropes, the Bahuda (return) nine days later; Jagannath puja at home, khichdi bhog, small chariots.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra falls on the Dwitiya of the Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month — in Puri, Odisha, Lord Jagannath (Shri Krishna), elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra ride three enormous wooden chariots (Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, Darpadalana) from the Shrimandir to the Gundicha temple (the aunt's house) three km away — lakhs of devotees pull the chariot ropes; they stay there nine days and return on Dashami by the 'Bahuda Yatra', the Suna Besha (golden attire) on the way, then the Niladri Bije.
It has become a festival of all India — Ahmedabad (India's second-largest Rath Yatra), Kolkata (ISKCON), Delhi, Mumbai, Mahesh-Mayapur in Bengal, chariots big and small in every city; at home women worship the Jagannath trinity, offer khichdi bhog, a small chariot for the children, 'Jai Jagannath'. Touching the chariot rope gives the fruit of a hundred yajnas — hence the crowds. Below are this year's date, vidhi, samagri, katha, prasad and regional customs.
Significance — why this vrat
Skanda Purana (Utkala Khanda): 'Rathe tu Vamanam drishtva punarjanma na vidyate' — seeing Vamana (Jagannath) on the chariot ends rebirth; pulling the chariot gives the fruit of a hundred yajnas; in the Rath Yatra the Lord himself comes among the people — darshan for all without distinction of caste or creed (entry rules apply in the temple, not on the chariot).
The sequence of the Puri Rath Yatra: Snana Purnima (Jyeshtha Purnima — a bath of 108 pots, then the deities fall 'ill' — Anavasara 15 days), Nava Yauvana darshan, Rath Yatra (Dwitiya — Pahandi, Chhera Pahanra — the Gajapati king sweeps the chariots with a golden broom), 7 days at Gundicha (Hera Panchami — Lakshmi arrives sulking), Bahuda (Dashami), Suna Besha (Ekadashi), Adhara Pana (Dwadashi), Niladri Bije (Trayodashi — Jagannath placates Lakshmi with rasgullas).
New chariots every year — of phasi and dhaura wood, Nandighosha (Jagannath — 16 wheels, red-yellow), Taladhwaja (Balabhadra — 14 wheels, red-green), Darpadalana/Devadalana (Subhadra — 12 wheels, red-black); the Nabakalebara (new idols — of neem wood) every 12 or 19 years; Jagannath = Krishna's Daru Brahma form, without hands and feet, large eyes — 'Lord of the universe', sister Subhadra in the middle, the chariot is also a festival of sister and brothers.
Puja vidhi (step by step)
This is the household vidhi — worship of the Jagannath trinity, the small chariot, khichdi bhog, chariot darshan; at home or the city's Rath Yatra if Puri is not possible.
- From Snana Purnima (Jyeshtha Purnima — 15 days earlier) bathe the home Jagannath idol/picture and keep 'Anavasara' — some homes keep a curtain for 15 days, the Nava Yauvana darshan on the morning of the Rath Yatra; the simple form — bathing and adorning on the morning of the Rath Yatra.
- The morning of the Rath Yatra: bathe, clean clothes; at the puja place Jagannath-Balabhadra-Subhadra (the trinity picture/small idols), yellow-red flowers, Tulsi, sandalwood-kumkum, lamp-incense; sankalp — 'the family's welfare through the darshan/service of the Rath Yatra'.
- The small chariot (with the children): a chariot of wood/cardboard/a toy, decorated with flowers, coloured cloth and flags, the trinity seated, a rope; pulling it in the courtyard/lane with 'Jai Jagannath', aarti; many families in the society/temple chariot.
- Bhog: khichdi (Jagannath's favourite — ghee-moong-rice), dalma (Odia dal with vegetables), kheer, rasgulla, fruit, pakhala (water-rice — for the heat), poori-halwa; Tulsi leaves; distributing prasad after the bhog (Jagannath's mahaprasad knows no caste — for all).
- Chariot darshan/the rope: touching and pulling the chariot rope at the city's Rath Yatra (ISKCON/temple), 'Jai Jagannath/Hari Bol'; in Puri, chariot darshan on the Bada Danda (care in the crowd); TV/live darshan is regarded as auspicious too — offer a coconut and fruit with the darshan.
- Vrat (optional): many women take fruit/one meal on Dwitiya, a night vigil and kirtan (the Jagannath Ashtakam 'Kadachit Kalindi-tata-vipina-sangita-taralo…'); sister and brother — a gift for the sister in memory of Subhadra and Balabhadra (some regions).
- Nine days: the Gundicha stay — daily bhog and aarti at home; Hera Panchami (the fifth day) Lakshmi puja; Bahuda (Dashami) — worship of the returning chariot, rasgulla bhog; Suna Besha (Ekadashi) — darshan of the picture in golden attire; Niladri Bije (Trayodashi) — rasgullas for Lakshmi and Jagannath.
- Charity: grain-clothes, a khichdi bhandara; water and sherbet for devotees (the heat of Ashadha); service in chariot-building/the bhandara.

Open panchang →Vrat katha (the story)
King Indradyumna (of Malwa) saw Neelmadhav in a dream; he sent Vidyapati — the Sabara king Vishwavasu worshipped Neelmadhav in a secret cave; Vidyapati married his daughter Lalita and learnt the way, but the deity vanished. A voice from the sky — 'a daru (log) will come from the sea, make the idols from it'; the old carpenter (Vishwakarma himself) set a condition — no one open the door for 21 days; on the 14th day the sounds stopped, Queen Gundicha opened the door — the idols unfinished (without hands and feet), the carpenter vanished; Narada said 'this very form shall be worshipped'. Hence Jagannath's incomplete wooden form.
The tale of the Rath Yatra: in Dwarka Subhadra wished to see the city with her brothers — Krishna and Balarama seated her between them on a chariot and took her around (Subhadra in the middle on the chariot); another tale — Krishna's aunt (Gundicha — the queen) invited the three to her home, they stayed nine days — the Gundicha temple is the 'aunt's house'; a third — Krishna and Balarama wished to go to Vrindavan in memory of the gopis, Rukmini-Lakshmi sulked — on Hera Panchami Lakshmi breaks a wheel of the chariot (a play of displeasure).
The tale of the rasgulla: when Jagannath returned to the temple after the Bahuda, Lakshmi shut the door — 'where were you nine days without telling me?'; Jagannath placated her with rasgullas (kheer mohan), then the door opened — rasgulla bhog on Niladri Bije; Odisha's 'Rasagola Dibasa' is this day. The Gajapati king's Chhera Pahanra — even the king is a servant before the Lord, sweeping the chariots with a golden broom — a message of equality.
Khichdi, dalma, pakhala, rasgulla, poda pitha — Jagannath's mahaprasad
In Puri 56 dishes (chhappan) daily in clay pots on wood fire — the mahaprasad (for all at the Ananda Bazaar); at home khichdi (Jagannath's favourite — the tale of Karmabai), dalma, pakhala rice, kheer, rasgulla; sherbet and pana in the heat of the Rath Yatra; a festival of sister and brothers — sweets shared.
- Khichdi: moong dal-rice-ghee-ginger-asafoetida (Karmabai's khichdi — Jagannath's first bhog), dalma (arhar dal with pumpkin, brinjal, raw banana and panch phoran)
- Pakhala rice (rice in water with curd and lemon — the heat of Odisha), saga bhaja, badi chura, mashed potato
- Kheer (khiri), rasgulla (Pahala/Odia — Niladri Bije), chhena poda, poda pitha, malpua, kanji
- Pana (bel/mango sherbet), buttermilk, fruit (mango-jamun-banana-litchi), coconut laddoo
- North India: poori-halwa-khichdi, ISKCON prasad (khichdi-halwa-sabzi); Gujarat (Ahmedabad): mag-jambu (moong-jamun prasad), khichdi-kadhi, fafda; Bengal (Mahesh): khichuri-labra, payesh, rasgulla

What are Hera Panchami and Suna Besha?
Hera Panchami — on the fifth day of the Rath Yatra Lakshmi comes to Gundicha in a palanquin, sulks and has a piece of Jagannath's chariot (Nandighosha) broken before returning (a play-leela); Suna Besha — the day after the Bahuda (Ekadashi) the three deities on the chariots in golden hands, feet and crowns — lakhs take darshan; Niladri Bije — entering the temple after placating Lakshmi with rasgullas.
