🌊 Ganga Dussehra (& Nirjala Ekadashi) Puja Vidhi — step by step
This is the household vidhi — a dawn bath, ten lamps and charity, Ganga puja on the Dashami; the waterless fast and water charity on the Ekadashi, paran on the Dwadashi.
How to do Ganga Dussehra (& Nirjala Ekadashi) — the steps
- On the Dashami bathe in Brahma Muhurat (time above) in the Ganga/a river/pond or at home with Gangajal in the water — ten dips (or water over the head ten times), 'Om Namo Gangayai Vishwarupinyai Narayanyai Namo Namah'; arghya to the Sun.
- Ganga puja: a picture of Ganga ji/Gangajal in a kalash; roli-sandalwood-akshat, ten flowers (lotus/marigold), ten fruits, ten lamps (dough/clay — floated at the ghat or in a water vessel at home), incense; water and bel leaves for Shiva (the Ganga from his locks); Ganga Stotra/'Ganga Lahari'/the Ganga aarti 'Om Jai Gange Mata'.
- Ten charities (the Dussehra charity): ten kinds of things — a water pot, fan, umbrella, slippers, sattu, melon-cucumber, grain, jaggery, cloth, dakshina — to ten Brahmins/needy people (or in tens); setting up a water stall; cow service.
- Fast (Dashami): fruit/one meal; ten lamps at the ghat/Tulsi platform in the evening; listen to the Ganga katha (below); tarpan with Gangajal for the ancestors (their satisfaction) — Ganga Dussehra is for the ancestors too.
- Ekadashi — Nirjala: give up water from the evening of Dashami (last after the puja); on Ekadashi bathe before sunrise, sankalp 'the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat without water'; Vishnu puja (Tulsi, yellow flowers, panchamrit), 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya', Vishnu Sahasranama; no water all day (achaman/rinsing is allowed); rest in a cool place, bhajans.
- The Ekadashi charity: water-filled pots (clay, with lid and mango leaves), a stall of sherbet/buttermilk, fan, umbrella, melon, sattu, sesame-water — 'water charity' above all; green fodder and water for cows; water bowls for birds.
- Night vigil (if possible) — Vishnu bhajans; paran on the Dwadashi after sunrise, once the Hari Vasar has passed — first Tulsi water, then food and water to a Brahmin/the needy, then yourself (light — khichdi/daliya).
- The pregnant, unwell and elderly: not waterless — the Ekadashi with fruit and water; the spirit is what matters. Care in the crowd and heat at the ghat on Ganga Dussehra.

The sattu and mango of Dussehra and the water charity of the Ekadashi

- Ganga Dussehra: sattu (chana-barley) sherbet/laddoo, aamras, melon-cucumber, kheer (the Dussehra bhog), poori-aloo; a bel-sherbet stall at the ghat

Rules — do's and don'ts
✅ Do
- A dawn bath on the Dashami with ten dips/Gangajal; ten lamps, ten fruits, ten charities
- Water charity on both days — pots, stalls, sherbet, buttermilk: the greatest merit of summer
- Nirjala Ekadashi according to strength; if not possible, with fruit and water — the spirit matters
- Paran on Dwadashi after the Hari Vasar; charity and feeding first
- Tarpan with Gangajal for the ancestors; the Ganga door-paper on the house door
❌ Don't
- No soap, plastic or puja litter in the Ganga/river — lamps on leaf plates, flowers and prasad in the ghat's pots/water tanks
- No deep water or strong current at the ghat; never leave children or elders alone; avoid the midday sun
- No waterless fast for the pregnant, unwell, elderly or children; if dizzy or vomiting take water at once — the vrat is not broken, saving life is dharma
- No rice or grain on Ekadashi; no paran after the Dwadashi has passed
- No dirty or old pot for water charity — a new clay one, covered

Frequently asked questions
When is Ganga Dussehra in {Y}?
The date at the top is this year's Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami — from panchang calculations; Nirjala Ekadashi (the next day) is in the table too; the Delhi times for the dawn bath (Brahma Muhurat) and Abhijit are shown there.
Are Ganga Dussehra and Dussehra (Vijayadashami) the same?
No — Ganga Dussehra is the festival of the Ganga's descent on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami (June); Vijayadashami (Dussehra) is Ashwin Shukla Dashami (October) — Rama-Ravana/Durga-Mahishasura; similar names, different festivals.
How to keep Nirjala Ekadashi — really without water?
The scriptural rule is giving up water from sunrise to the next sunrise (achaman/rinsing allowed); it is hard in the heat of Jyeshtha — only healthy adults should keep it, stay in a cool place, avoid exertion; the pregnant, unwell and elderly with fruit and water. If dizzy, take water — the fruit of the vrat comes from faith, not suffering.
What is the Ganga Dussehra door-paper?
In Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand the custom of putting a paper with a picture and mantra of Ganga ji (the 'Ganga Dussehra patra') on the main door on Ganga Dussehra — believed to protect from lightning, storms and fire; available from a priest/the market, it stays up all year.
What are the ten charities?
Ten kinds of things or in tens — a water pot, fan, umbrella, slippers, sattu, melon, grain, jaggery, cloth, dakshina; ten Brahmins/needy people; ten lamps and ten fruits for the Ganga. If means are limited, even one pot of water is enough.
How to observe Ganga Dussehra far from the Ganga?
A few drops of Gangajal in the bath water at home and water over the head ten times, puja of a Ganga picture/kalash, ten lamps in the home water vessel, the Ganga aarti, water charity — fully valid; a bath in any river or pond with remembrance of the Ganga is fruitful too.
