Paush Putrada Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha of Pausha month — around Makar Sankranti (sometimes before, sometimes after). 'Putrada' = giver of children; the vrat is kept by childless couples for the blessing of a child and by mothers for the health and progress of their children. There are two Putrada Ekadashis in the year — Pausha (prominent in North India) and Shravana (in the south and west).

It is a Vishnu fast — restraint from Dashami evening, fasting, puja and vigil on Ekadashi, paran on Dwadashi; charity in the child's name. Below are this year's date, the Dwadashi for paran, vidhi, samagri, katha, fasting food and regional customs.

Significance — why this vrat

The Bhavishya Purana calls this Ekadashi the giver of children — in the katha King Suketuman received a son through this very vrat. Homes waiting for a child have both husband and wife keep it; mothers keep it wishing well for their children.

Pausha is the month of the Sun and of Vishnu — on this Ekadashi the worship of Narayana, the 'Santan Gopal' mantra and the service of Bal Gopal (Laddu Gopal) are special; many homes offer a swing and new clothes to Laddu Gopal on this day.

The general rule of Ekadashi — no rice or grain, paran on Dwadashi after the Hari Vasar; the Dwadashi date is shown above.

Puja vidhi (step by step)

This is the household Ekadashi vidhi — the sankalp for a child's welfare, Vishnu/Bal Gopal puja, vigil, paran.

  1. Sattvik food on the night of Dashami; on Ekadashi bathe before sunrise, wear yellow; sankalp — 'I keep the Putrada Ekadashi vrat for the blessing of a child / for my children's health' (best if husband and wife keep it together).
  2. Worship of Vishnu/Lakshmi-Narayana and Bal Gopal (Laddu Gopal) — panchamrit bath, yellow clothes, Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, sandalwood, incense and lamp, naivedya (butter-mishri, fruit, yellow sweets); 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' 108 times.
  3. The Santan Gopal mantra — 'Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Glaum Devakisuta Govinda Vasudeva Jagatpate dehi me tanayam Krishna tvamaham sharanam gatah' — 108 chants (or as many as possible); swing Bal Gopal, lullaby/bhajan.
  4. Fruit/waterless all day (as strength allows); no sleeping in the day; read or listen to the Bhagavata/Ekadashi katha; a lamp at the Tulsi platform and Vishnu aarti in the evening.
  5. Night vigil — bhajans/Vishnu Sahasranama; till midnight if not the whole night.
  6. Charity: grain, clothes and fruit in the child's/children's name; feeding a Brahmin; fodder to a cow; sweets and gifts to children.
  7. Paran: on Dwadashi after sunrise, once the Hari Vasar has passed and before the Dwadashi ends — charity first, then a meal with Tulsi water.

Vrat katha (the story)

King Suketuman of the city of Bhadravati and Queen Shaivya were righteous but childless — their worry was who would offer the pind, how the ancestors would be satisfied. One day the sorrowing king wandered into the forest; thirsty, he reached a lake where sages had their ashram. The sages said — 'Today is Pausha Shukla Ekadashi, we are keeping its vrat; it is the Putrada Ekadashi, keep it too.'

The king and queen kept the vrat with vidhi, held the night vigil and did paran on Dwadashi; in time the queen bore a radiant son who became a king who cared for his people. Since then Pausha Shukla Ekadashi is 'Putrada' — the Ekadashi of the blessing of children. The essence of the story: a vrat with faith, charity and patience.

In North India this day (in some years along with Makar Sankranti) carries the feeling of a birth celebration of Bal Gopal — new clothes and a swing for Laddu Gopal; mothers bless their own children as forms of Gopal.

Ekadashi fasting food and Gopal's bhog

No rice or grain on Ekadashi; butter-mishri, panjiri and yellow sweets for Bal Gopal. In the cold of Pausha, dry fruits and sesame-jaggery in the fasting food.

  • Gopal's bhog: butter-mishri, coriander panjiri, saffron kheer (on Dwadashi), besan laddoo, fruit, Tulsi
  • Fasting food: sabudana, singhara-kuttu, potato, peanuts, dry fruits, milk, fruit — rock salt
  • Paran: Tulsi water, then khichdi/dal-rice (grain is essential on Dwadashi)
  • For children: sweets, fruit, new clothes — charity in the child's name
  • Pregnant/unwell with fruit and milk; never waterless

Regional customs

Pausha Putrada in the north and east, Shravana Putrada in the south and west — both the Ekadashi of children.

Uttar Pradesh-Bihar-Jharkhand: 'Putrada/Pausha Ekadashi' — the couple's vrat of the childless, service of Laddu Gopal, Santan Gopal japa; in Bihar the Ekadashi comes with preparations for Makar Sankranti tilkut; mothers give grain in their children's name.
Punjab-Haryana-Delhi-Rajasthan: The Ekadashi fast, kirtan in temples; in Rajasthan 'Paush Bada' — a bhandara of hot food (dal-bati-churma/badas) in temples all through Pausha, special on this Ekadashi; many homes bring Bal Gopal home wishing for a child.
Bengal-Odisha-Assam: 'Paush Putrada/Vaikuntha Ekadashi' — in some years this is the Vaikuntha Ekadashi (Dhanurmasa); darshan of the Vaikuntha door of Jagannath at Puri; Narayana puja and pitha in Bengal.
Maharashtra-Gujarat: The Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is more common here; the Pausha Ekadashi is kept as 'Saphala/Putrada' with fasting at Vitthal temples; 'Posh Sud Agiyaras' in Gujarat.
South India: The Shukla Ekadashi of Dhanurmasa = 'Vaikuntha Ekadashi' (the Vaikuntha door at Tirupati-Srirangam) — in many years the same as Pausha Putrada; darshan all night, paran the next day; also kept with the wish for a child.
