🌼 Lalita Saptami Puja Vidhi — step by step
The household vidhi of Lalita Saptami — puja and sankalp in the morning, fruit or one meal in the day, aarti of Lalita and Radha-Krishna in the evening and preparation for Radha Ashtami; with Shiva-Parvati worship where the Santan Saptami custom exists.
How to do Lalita Saptami — the steps
- Morning: bathe, clean clothes (pink, yellow or green); at the puja place the idol or picture of Radha-Krishna, beside it a picture of Lalita Sakhi (if available — to Radha's left) or of the Ashta Sakhis; kalash, flower decoration.
- Sankalp: 'I (name) keep the Lalita Saptami vrat for (the sakhi mood / children's welfare / good fortune); tomorrow Radha Ashtami' — release the water.
- Lalita puja: pink-yellow clothes for Lalita Sakhi, a garland (jasmine-rose), sandal and saffron, the sixteen shringar items (bangles, bindi, sindoor, mehndi — married women), attar; 'Om Shri Lalitayai Namah' / 'Lalita Sakhi ki jai'; butter, mishri and fruit for Radha-Krishna; the Lalita Ashtaka or the Ashta Sakhi stuti if possible.
- The sakhi mood: a prayer to become a helper in the service of Radha-Krishna — 'Lalite! give me a place in the service of Radha-Madhava'; bhajans and kirtan ('Lalita Sakhi ki jai', 'Radhe-Radhe'); the girls and friends of the house sit together for the puja (the sakhi-mandal custom).
- Santan Saptami (where the custom exists): worship of Shiva-Parvati — an offering of milk-rice or kheer-puri, a raw thread in the children's names (muktabharan) tied on the wrist, the katha (King Nahusha and Chandramukhi), arghya to the Sun; the fast without food or on fruit, one saltless meal.
- Offering: butter and mishri, kheer, fruit, peda, malpua (some), panchamrit, Tulsi leaf (Krishna); rose and jasmine and sweets for Lalita Sakhi; aarti (Radha-Krishna + 'Lalita Sakhi ki jai').
- Evening: evening aarti, lamps, kirtan; preparations for Radha Ashtami — tomorrow's abhishek items, Radha's new clothes, arbi and puri; fruit meal; paran the next day (if the Radha Ashtami fast is added, a two-day fast — as one is able).
- A Braj visit (if possible): darshan at the Lalita temple and Lalita Kund of Unchagaon and at Barsana; if not, the sakhi puja at home in the same spirit.

The offering of Lalita Saptami is simple and Vaishnava — butter and mishri, kheer, peda, fruit, panchamrit; the one fasting takes fruit or one meal in the day (as on Radha Ashtami); in the Santan Saptami custom one saltless meal of milk-rice or kheer-puri; no onion, garlic or meat.

Rules — do's and don'ts
✅ Do
- Worship Lalita Sakhi and Radha-Krishna the day before Radha Ashtami, solah shringar, bhajans in the sakhi mood; prepare for tomorrow
- Fast as you are able — fruit or one meal; no grain in the Gaudiya custom; if keeping both days (Lalita + Radha Ashtami), paran the day after Radha Ashtami
- Where the Santan Saptami custom exists, Shiva-Parvati worship, raw thread, milk-rice, katha — in the children's names
- Married women and maidens pray to Lalita for harmony in marriage and the partner of their choice; group puja with friends (sakhi-mandal)
- Ill or pregnant: puja and bhajans only; prasad to the children first
❌ Don't
- Confusing Lalita Saptami (Bhadrapada Shukla 7, Lalita the sakhi) with Lalita Panchami (Ashwin Shukla 5, Devi Tripurasundari) or Lalahi Chhath (Bhadrapada Krishna 6, Hal Shashthi) — all three are different
- Onion, garlic, meat, alcohol; a stale offering for Radha-Krishna; quarrels during the puja (the sakhi mood is one of harmony)
- Forcing the rigour of a two-day fast on the ill or pregnant; keeping children hungry
- Neglecting Lalita Sakhi and worshipping only Radha-Krishna — in the Vaishnava view the sakhi's grace comes first
- Tying the Santan Saptami thread without sankalp or names; panicking if the thread breaks — tie a new one
Vrat katha
The katha of Lalita Sakhi: in Goloka Lalita is Radha's dearest companion — the one who arranges Radha's service, shringar, messages and the lila of 'maan' (loving pique); she pleads Radha's side with Krishna and is a day… Read the full katha →

When is Lalita Saptami in {Y}?
Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami — date above (Delhi), exactly one day before Radha Ashtami; tithi window above; puja in the morning to midday (Abhijit), aarti in the evening.
Who is Lalita?
The chief sakhi of Radha Rani — first of the eight sakhis, a day older than Radha, the orchestrator of Radha-Krishna's lila; Unchagaon (Barsana) is her birthplace; in Vaishnava practice Lalita's grace is the door to the service of Radha-Krishna.
How to observe Lalita Saptami and Radha Ashtami together?
On the Saptami worship Lalita Sakhi and Radha-Krishna, take fruit, prepare for tomorrow; on the Ashtami the midday abhishek, arbi-puri-kheer, Radha's shringar; if fasting both days, paran the day after the Ashtami — as able; in Braj a two-day fair.
What is the difference between Lalita Saptami, Lalita Panchami and Lalahi Chhath?
Lalita Saptami — Bhadrapada Shukla 7, the birth of Radha's sakhi Lalita; Lalita Panchami — Ashwin Shukla 5 (Navratri), the Devi Lalita Tripurasundari (Upang Lalita vrat); Lalahi Chhath — Bhadrapada Krishna 6, Hal Shashthi (Balarama, a children's vrat); similar names, different festivals.
What is Santan Saptami — the same day?
Yes — on Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami Gujarat, Maharashtra and UP keep 'Santan Saptami / Muktabharan Saptami': Shiva-Parvati worship, a raw thread on the wrist in the children's names, saltless milk-rice or kheer-puri, the katha of Nahusha and Chandramukhi — a mothers' vrat for the protection of children; families with the custom keep it alongside.
What to eat in the vrat?
Fruit or one sattvic meal (butter-mishri, kheer, fruit); no grain in the Gaudiya custom (as on Ekadashi); saltless milk-rice or kheer-puri in Santan Saptami; no onion, garlic or meat.
Men and children too?
Yes — everyone in the Vaishnava tradition; include the children in the bhajans and prasad of Lalita-Radha; no rigour of fasting for them.
