🌼 Lalita Saptami 2027
Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami — the day before Radha Ashtami: the birth festival of Lalita, Radha's chief sakhi (first of the Ashta Sakhis; Unchagaon, Barsana); also the women's 'Lalita Saptami' vrat of Purvanchal, Bihar and Bengal, and the Santan Saptami of Gujarat-Maharashtra — children's welfare, good fortune; date, vidhi, katha and customs.
**Lalita Saptami** on Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami — exactly one day before Radha Ashtami — celebrates the appearance of **Lalita Devi**, the chief sakhi (companion) of Radha Rani, first of the eight sakhis and a day older than Radha. At Unchagaon near Barsana (Lalita's birthplace) and in the temples of Vrindavan and Barsana the day sees the abhishek and shringar of Lalita Sakhi, preparations for Radha Ashtami and 'Lalita-Radha' tableaux; Gaudiya Vaishnavas and ISKCON keep a fast and kirtan on 'Lalita Saptami'.
In homes it is the eve of Radha Ashtami — married women worship Lalita and Radha, do the solah shringar and sing bhajans in the sakhi mood; in parts of Purvanchal, Bihar and Bengal Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami also carries a women's 'Lalita/Lalahi Saptami' vrat (children's welfare, good fortune) — different names, one date. Above the date and muhurat; below the vidhi, samagri, the Lalita katha, offering, regional customs and FAQs.
Significance — why this vrat
Lalita Sakhi: chief among Radha's eight sakhis (Lalita, Vishakha, Chitra, Indulekha, Champakalata, Rangadevi, Tungavidya, Sudevi) — the orchestrator of Radha-Krishna's lila, the ideal of the 'sakhi bhava'; in the Vaishnava view the service of Radha-Krishna is not attained without Lalita's grace; born on Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami at Unchagaon (4 km from Barsana).
The eve of Radha Ashtami: Lalita is a day older than Radha (folk belief) — hence her birth festival the day before Radha Ashtami; in Braj the two days form one chain of celebration; the Gaudiya maths fast on this day (as on Ekadashi) and prepare for Radha Ashtami.
The women's vrat (Lalita/Lalahi Saptami): in Purvanchal, Bihar and Bengal married women worship Lalita Devi (as Shakti or as the sakhi) on the Saptami — for children, good fortune and Radha's grace; in some places it is joined with 'Santan Saptami' (Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami as 'Santan Saptami / Muktabharan Saptami' — Shiva-Parvati worship, a vrat for the protection of children, in Gujarat, Maharashtra and UP).
The Saptami deity: Saptami is the Sun's tithi — some homes add the Sun arghya and Shiva-Parvati worship; the name resembles Lalita Tripurasundari (Lalita Maha Tripurasundari) — but this is the festival of Lalita the sakhi; Lalita Panchami (Ashwin) belongs to the Devi and is separate.
Puja vidhi (step by step)

- The sakhi mood: a prayer to become a helper in the service of Radha-Krishna — 'Lalite! give me a place in the service of Radha-Madhava'; bhajans and kirtan ('Lalita Sakhi ki jai', 'Radhe-Radhe'); the girls and friends of the house sit together for the puja (the sakhi-mandal custom).
- Santan Saptami (where the custom exists): worship of Shiva-Parvati — an offering of milk-rice or kheer-puri, a raw thread in the children's names (muktabharan) tied on the wrist, the katha (King Nahusha and Chandramukhi), arghya to the Sun; the fast without food or on fruit, one saltless meal.

Open panchang →Vrat katha (the story)
The katha of Lalita Sakhi: in Goloka Lalita is Radha's dearest companion — the one who arranges Radha's service, shringar, messages and the lila of 'maan' (loving pique); she pleads Radha's side with Krishna and is a day older than Radha. In the Braj descent she appeared on Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami at Unchagaon (near Barsana) as the daughter of Vishoka and Sharada (folk names); Radha was born the next day — hence the two festivals together. Rupa Goswami (Radha-Krishna-Ganoddesha-Dipika) describes Lalita — fair, dressed in peacock-feather hues, spirited and eloquent by nature, companion of Radha's every joy and sorrow; in Vaishnava practice becoming 'Lalita's maidservant' is the doorway to Radha's service.
A folk katha (Lalita Kund): once Radha was in maan (sulking) with Krishna; Lalita explained to Krishna that Radha's pique too is love, and reunited the couple — since then Lalita is the sakhi of 'the union of the couple'; the Lalita Kund at Unchagaon is held to be the place of that lila; married women pray to Lalita for reconciliation in marriage.
The katha of Santan Saptami (where this vrat is joined): King Nahusha and Queen Chandramukhi were childless; from the Brahmin lady Rupavati they learned the method of the Santan Saptami vrat of Bhadrapada Shukla Saptami (Shiva-Parvati worship, the raw-thread muktabharan, milk-rice and kheer) — but could not complete it; in the next birth, by the Devi's grace, the method came back to them, they kept the vrat and were blessed with children — hence mothers keep this vrat for the protection of their children.
Butter-mishri, kheer, peda, fruit; milk-rice or kheer-puri (saltless) in Santan Saptami
The offering of Lalita Saptami is simple and Vaishnava — butter and mishri, kheer, peda, fruit, panchamrit; the one fasting takes fruit or one meal in the day (as on Radha Ashtami); in the Santan Saptami custom one saltless meal of milk-rice or kheer-puri; no onion, garlic or meat.
- Offering: butter and mishri, rice kheer, peda, malpua (some homes), panchamrit, Tulsi leaf (Krishna), fruit (banana, apple, pomegranate), dry fruits; rose-water barfi or laddoo for Lalita Sakhi
- Fruit meal (for the one fasting): fruit, milk, sabudana, makhana kheer, water-chestnut halwa; or one sattvic meal — family custom
- Santan Saptami (where customary): milk-rice (rice, milk, sugar) or kheer-puri — one saltless meal; prasad to the children first
- Preparation for tomorrow: arbi curry and puri, kheer, malpua (Radha Ashtami)
- Forbidden: onion, garlic, meat, alcohol, stale offering, grain for the one fasting (in the fruit-only custom)

✅ Do
- Worship Lalita Sakhi and Radha-Krishna the day before Radha Ashtami, solah shringar, bhajans in the sakhi mood; prepare for tomorrow
- Fast as you are able — fruit or one meal; no grain in the Gaudiya custom; if keeping both days (Lalita + Radha Ashtami), paran the day after Radha Ashtami
- Where the Santan Saptami custom exists, Shiva-Parvati worship, raw thread, milk-rice, katha — in the children's names
- Married women and maidens pray to Lalita for harmony in marriage and the partner of their choice; group puja with friends (sakhi-mandal)
- Ill or pregnant: puja and bhajans only; prasad to the children first
❌ Don't
- Confusing Lalita Saptami (Bhadrapada Shukla 7, Lalita the sakhi) with Lalita Panchami (Ashwin Shukla 5, Devi Tripurasundari) or Lalahi Chhath (Bhadrapada Krishna 6, Hal Shashthi) — all three are different
- Onion, garlic, meat, alcohol; a stale offering for Radha-Krishna; quarrels during the puja (the sakhi mood is one of harmony)
- Forcing the rigour of a two-day fast on the ill or pregnant; keeping children hungry
- Neglecting Lalita Sakhi and worshipping only Radha-Krishna — in the Vaishnava view the sakhi's grace comes first
- Tying the Santan Saptami thread without sankalp or names; panicking if the thread breaks — tie a new one
