Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the Panchami of the Shukla Paksha of Magha month — five days after Mauni Amavasya. It marks the arrival of spring and the manifestation of Saraswati, goddess of learning. Yellow flowers, yellow clothes and yellow rice at home and in schools; children's slate-puja and first letters (Vidyarambh) are done on this day.
For women it is the festival of the colour yellow, the mustard fields and the children's studies; it is also an 'abujh' muhurat — weddings, griha pravesh and new ventures are auspicious on this day without consulting the panchang. Significance — why this vrat
Saraswati puja: the goddess of learning, music and art — students, artists and teachers worship books, pens and instruments on this day; in eastern India this is the main day of 'Saraswati Puja' (Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Assam).
Yellow symbolises the mustard flower, the Sun's radiance and intellect — hence yellow clothes, yellow flowers (marigold, mustard), yellow food (saffron rice, besan laddoo, boondi).
Abujh muhurat: Vasant Panchami is counted among the three-and-a-half abujh muhurats (in some traditions) — weddings, mundan and griha pravesh without a muhurat check; this is why the most weddings in the country happen on this day. Worship of Kamadeva and Rati, and the preparations for Holi (planting the Holika pole) also begin on this day.
Puja vidhi (step by step)
This is the household vidhi — yellow clothes and Saraswati puja in the morning, children's Vidyarambh, yellow dishes; the Bengal-Bihar custom separately below.
- Bathe in the morning, wear yellow/basanti clothes; a yellow cloth on a wooden seat at the puja place, the idol/picture of Maa Saraswati (white robes, veena, swan); Ganesha alongside.
- Kalash sthapana; for Saraswati yellow and white flowers, marigold and mustard blossoms, yellow sandalwood/turmeric, akshat, white/yellow sweets; 108 chants of 'Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah' or the Saraswati Vandana 'Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala'.
- Place books, pens, notebooks, the children's school bags, musical instruments (harmonium/tabla), the laptop — before the Mother and offer roli, akshat and flowers; on this day they are not touched or read (Bengal custom) or are auspiciously begun (northern custom).
- Vidyarambh/first letters: seat a child of 2-5 on your lap, spread rice/turmeric on a thali and guide the child's finger to write 'Om' or 'A', then on a slate with chalk; the guru/elders bless; yellow sweets for the child.
- Bhog — saffron rice/sweet yellow rice, besan laddoo, boondi, yellow fruit (banana); Saraswati aarti; prasad to children and neighbours.
- Women: yellow flowers/a yellow chunari in the hair, water to the mustard field/plants; new beginnings at home — a vow for the children's studies, a new instrument or book.
- It is an abujh muhurat — wedding/griha pravesh/shop opening on this day without a separate muhurat; Kamadeva and Rati are also worshipped (marital love).
- The next day (Shashthi) Saraswati visarjan (Bengal-Bihar: immersion of the idol, 'dadhikarma'); in North India the preparations for planting the Holi pole (Holika) begin from this day.

After creating the world, Brahma saw — everything was silent and dull; no sound, no music. He sprinkled water from his kamandal and a radiant goddess appeared — veena, book, rosary and the gesture of blessing in her hands. Brahma said — play the veena; with the first note of the veena speech, music and intellect came into creation. This is Saraswati — 'Vagishwari'; and the day was Magha Shukla Panchami.
The second story is of Vasant and Kamadeva — Shiva was lost in penance, and a son of Shiva was needed to kill Tarakasura; the gods sent Kamadeva, who took Vasant (spring) along — on this day Vasant made flowers bloom on earth and the mustard turned yellow. Kamadeva's arrow broke Shiva's meditation (and Kamadeva was burnt to ash — a story linked to Holi). Hence the Phaag season from Vasant Panchami to Holi.
A folk belief — Kalidasa was a fool, and humiliated by his wife Vidyottama he went to drown himself in a river; Saraswati appeared and gave him knowledge — on this day. Hence students take refuge in Saraswati.
Yellow bhog — saffron rice and besan laddoo
The food of Vasant Panchami is yellow and sweet — saffron rice (sweet yellow rice: rice-sugar-saffron-ghee-dry fruits), besan laddoo, boondi; in Bengal khichuri, begun bhaja and kul (ber) chutney; in Bihar the Saraswati Puja bhog of khichdi-chokha.
- Saffron rice (for 4): 1 cup rice, ¾ cup sugar, a pinch of saffron in milk, 3 tbsp ghee, cardamom, dry fruits — roast the rice in ghee, cook, add sugar and saffron at the end
- Besan/boondi laddoo, malpua, yellow kheer (saffron), banana-guava
- Bengal: khichuri, labra, begun bhaja, kul (ber) — the custom of eating ber for the first time on Panchami, chutney, payesh
- Bihar-Jharkhand: the Saraswati Puja khichdi-chokha, boondi, ber
- Punjab: sweet (yellow) rice, sarson ka saag with makki roti along with kite-flying
