💛 Vasant Panchami (Saraswati Puja) Puja Vidhi — step by step
This is the household vidhi — yellow clothes and Saraswati puja in the morning, children's Vidyarambh, yellow dishes; the Bengal-Bihar custom separately below.
How to do Vasant Panchami (Saraswati Puja) — the steps
- Bathe in the morning, wear yellow/basanti clothes; a yellow cloth on a wooden seat at the puja place, the idol/picture of Maa Saraswati (white robes, veena, swan); Ganesha alongside.
- Kalash sthapana; for Saraswati yellow and white flowers, marigold and mustard blossoms, yellow sandalwood/turmeric, akshat, white/yellow sweets; 108 chants of 'Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah' or the Saraswati Vandana 'Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala'.
- Place books, pens, notebooks, the children's school bags, musical instruments (harmonium/tabla), the laptop — before the Mother and offer roli, akshat and flowers; on this day they are not touched or read (Bengal custom) or are auspiciously begun (northern custom).
- Vidyarambh/first letters: seat a child of 2-5 on your lap, spread rice/turmeric on a thali and guide the child's finger to write 'Om' or 'A', then on a slate with chalk; the guru/elders bless; yellow sweets for the child.
- Bhog — saffron rice/sweet yellow rice, besan laddoo, boondi, yellow fruit (banana); Saraswati aarti; prasad to children and neighbours.
- Women: yellow flowers/a yellow chunari in the hair, water to the mustard field/plants; new beginnings at home — a vow for the children's studies, a new instrument or book.
- It is an abujh muhurat — wedding/griha pravesh/shop opening on this day without a separate muhurat; Kamadeva and Rati are also worshipped (marital love).
- The next day (Shashthi) Saraswati visarjan (Bengal-Bihar: immersion of the idol, 'dadhikarma'); in North India the preparations for planting the Holi pole (Holika) begin from this day.

Rules — do's and don'ts
✅ Do
- Yellow clothes, yellow flowers, yellow bhog — the mark of the festival
- Children's Vidyarambh/worship of books and pens — a vow of learning
- Wedding/griha pravesh/new work — abujh muhurat, but an auspicious hour (Abhijit) is even better
- Saraswati Vandana with the whole family; gifts of pens and sweets to students
- Water to the mustard/plants — welcoming spring
❌ Don't
- In the Bengal-Bihar custom no touching or reading books on the puja day (they rest at the Mother's feet); in North India an auspicious start — follow your own custom
- No black or dull-white clothes on this day — yellow/basanti
- No cutting trees or plucking and discarding flowers — not on the day of spring
- Do not scare or scold children at the Vidyarambh — it is a celebration
- No plastic or paint in the river at the idol immersion (Bengal-Bihar)
Vrat katha
After creating the world, Brahma saw — everything was silent and dull; no sound, no music. He sprinkled water from his kamandal and a radiant goddess appeared — veena, book, rosary and the gesture of blessing in her hand… Read the full katha →
Frequently asked questions
When is Vasant Panchami in {Y}?
The date at the top is this year's Magha Shukla Panchami — from panchang calculations; the Abhijit puja muhurat (Delhi) is shown too. If the Panchami touches the forenoon on two days, the first day (purvahna-vyapini) is taken.
Can a wedding be held on Vasant Panchami without a muhurat?
Yes — it is regarded as an abujh muhurat (the most weddings in North India happen on this day); still, keep the lagna time in Abhijit/Godhuli. See wedding dates on the muhurat page.
How to do the Vidyarambh?
Dress the child (2-5 years) in yellow and seat them before Saraswati; spread rice/turmeric on a thali, hold their finger and write 'Om' or 'A'; then slate and chalk; blessings from the guru/elders, sweets. It can also be done at school or by a priest.
Why the colour yellow?
Mustard turns yellow in spring, the Sun is radiant; yellow symbolises intellect, energy and auspiciousness and is dear to Saraswati (and Vishnu) — hence clothes, flowers and food all yellow.
What is the link between Vasant Panchami and Holi?
The 40-day Phaag/Vasantotsav begins on this day — gulal in Braj, planting the Holika pole in villages; the story of Kamadeva and Vasant connects to Shiva and Holi. Holi is on Phalguna Purnima.
